Is this world a simulation? - The "simulation theory" by J A M I E 3 1 2 8 ⚠️ This project is full of hypothesis and none of these are FACTS. Please consider that this is my personal opinion! It would be grateful if you could take the time to read this, even though it's quite long : Hello everyone! Recently, while talking with my classmates, I've come into a fascinating topic about Artificial Intelligence, which is gaining a good amount of attention nowadays. There was a question about whether the "world" we experience is actually a simulation (better known as the "simulation theory"). The term "simulation" might be difficult for some to understand so I will give you a brief explanation. To understand this concept, let's consider a simple example. Imagine playing a video game, where you control a character who interacts with an artificially created world (e.g. GTA5). In this game, the characters, objects, and environments are all simulated, meaning they are not real but created by a computer program. Now let's take a popular movie called "The Matrix" as another example. In this movie, humans are unknowingly living in a simulated reality controlled by intelligent machines. They perceive this simulated world as real, but as a matter of fact, it's all a construct. The idea explored in "The Matrix" raises the question of whether our own reality could be a similar construct, an elaborate simulation created by an advanced civilization or higher intelligence. The reason why I shared these two examples (specifically) with you is because the world that we live might possibly be a simulation, in other words, controlled by others. In the video game example, we can draw a parallel between our experience as players controlling characters in a simulated world and the idea that we might be living in a similar construct. Just like the characters in the game are not aware of the player controlling them or the artificial nature of their world, we might be unaware of any higher-level existence or the simulated nature of our reality. "The Matrix" movie takes this concept even further by showing a scenario where humans are completely immersed in a simulated reality, looking at it as real. This concept makes us question what we believe is true and wonder if our own world could also be made up, with everything we see and experience being created by a simulated world. I believe that this topic is really important to share with you because it simply makes us question what is real and think deeply about our existence. It makes us wonder if there are other realities that we can't understand and pushes us to explore the world beyond of what we can look. Thinking about this concept help us connect the things we believe are real with things that might be hard for us to understand. If our world is indeed a massive simulation, we might ask ourselves : Could this be the very first time, in all of science and technology across the vast universe, that someone or something has created simulated life? There is no correct answer until we look and interpret it in real life -- This is always a question to debate about. If it turns out that this world is a simulation, will you still wake up tomorrow morning and go to school or work? Of course, no matter how much evidence comes out, it is difficult to confirm this hypothesis unless you wake up in a simulation and see the real world, like in "The Matrix". But, if there was a pill that would differentiate the real world from the simulation, would you take it while nobody knows what the real world looks like? Thank you so much for the people who read this through. Whether you believe this or not, we must look beyond of what we see in our life. This is partially inspired from "The Builtin" Article - What Is Simulation Theory? Are We Living in a Computer Simulation? : https://builtin.com/hardware/simulation-theory Edit : It seems like there are a lot discussions going on, and I've seen few interesting questions : 1) ??? : If this world is a simulation, why aren't there bugs/glitches happening? My Personal Opinion : If we assume that our reality is indeed a simulation created by highly advanced beings, it is plausible to consider that the creators have developed a simulation framework with incredibly sophisticated programming and error-correction mechanisms : Imagine they have super-computers that can simulate every nano-particles. They might have implemented advanced algorithms that prevent noticeable glitches or bugs from occurring within the simulation. Just as our video games and virtual reality simulations are becoming more realistic (for example, look at how much more realistic it became from GTA1 to GTA5), it is highly reasonable to see that our world is indeed a simulation.
