"Lion: the fiercest and most magnanimous of the four-footed beasts" -Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Dictionary (1755) This is a simple project that was based around Google and a website called "Lion Alert". All of my information came from this website. And all images came from Google. (Except for the background and the little hand drawn pictures of lions )
A bunch of facts about lions! Some female lions can grow manes. They even start to show male behaviour! Normally, the female lions run the pride. They hunt for food and make up most of the pride. But, the males still eat first. There is an average of 3 males in a pride. At 2-3 years old, the young males leave their pride to try to take over another. The 3 males in a pride help stabilise it and keep it from harm. Scientists believe that males don't hunt because of their manes. Their manes make it too warm to hunt, and the females stay cooler with their shorter fur. The males stay in a pride to defend the territory. Just as domestic cats claim 'territory' or have 'borders', all big cats have their own turf. If another lion tries to take over this territory, they will be chased out with many wounds, or even eradicated. If it is a male lion against another male leader, then the victor will take over the pride, along with all of the females, and destroy the cubs so that they can mate sooner. There are currently two recognised species of lion: the African lion and the Asiatic lion. But, scientists say that there are 24 sub-species, based on body size, coat and mane colour and thickness, and the retention of juvenile spots into adulthood. -Leopardfrost2711
