Prologue 500 years ago I laughed as I ran in the meadow, my long brown hair flowing in the wind behind me. I stopped to catch my breath, placing my hands on my knees. Suddenly, I was shoved over. The dirty little criminal started to laugh, but it was quickly replaced with a yelp as my hand shot out and grabbed his arm with a vise-like grip, pulling him down with me. I laughed, but it quickly turned into a gasp. “Mattheo Winstrom!” I yelled. The boy in question scrambled backwards in the tall grass at my tone. “You stained my dress!” I whined. My plain white blouse was tinged green at the bottom. Theo bit the inside of his cheek in an effort not to laugh. He opened his mouth, closed it, then opened it again. “Roselyn-” Theo started. “Do not tell me that this sounds like a ‘you problem’.” I cut him off. Then gave him a look. Theo shut his mouth. He stood up and offered his hand to me. I stood up on my own. “Well,” Theo said, “I should probably get-” I held up my hand. “Wait,” I said. Theo tilted his head. I looked around. “What do you hear?” I asked. Theo frowned. “Nothing, why?” Then realization dawned on his face. “Exactly,” I said. Normally, at this time of day, the meadow and the forest that surrounded it were alive with the chirping of crickets and other insects, and the wind that rustled the leaves. Then I looked up and gasped. The sky, which had been blue and cloud-free a moment ago, had filled with storm clouds and was a haunting hue of red. Thunder rumbled, and we jumped. “We can go back to my house,” I said, pointing to the little cottage that was on the outer edge of the meadow. Just then, the door to the cottage opened and a woman stepped onto the porch. “Roselyn!” My mom called. I grabbed Theo’s hand as lightning struck a tree close to her house, setting it on fire. We started to run towards the house. We were about twenty feet away when lightning struck the house, instantly lighting it up. I screamed as my mom ran back into the house. Theo grabbed my arms and held me back as I furiously tried to shake him off, kicking and struggling, trying to get back to my home. I stilled as the roof caved in, instantly crushing the house and anyone inside. “NO!!” I screamed. I fell onto my knees as everything went numb. Theo hesitantly hugged me. Another strike of lightning hit another tree, which lit up the tree next to it, until Theo and I were trapped by burning trees. Suddenly, the wind howled and lightning struck the ground right next to them, sending the kids flying. I was flung towards the outer edge of the meadow, and my back hit a burning tree with a sickening crack! I cried out in pain as the flames licked my back. I crawled away from the flaming trees, barely noticing any more pain as my eyes locked on a body lying prone on the ground, looking lifeless as a rag doll. “THEO!!” I cried, stumbling towards him. I didn’t seem to notice that the lightning was striking faster, or even that it was changing colors. Blue, red, green. All that mattered to me at the time was that Theo couldn’t be dead. Maybe that was the reason that I didn’t seem to notice the meteors that had started falling, blasting huge craters in the ground. Maybe that was the reason I didn’t notice that the wind was blowing up, not down. I collapsed next to my best friend, rolling his limp form over and checking for a pulse. His bright green eyes stared up at nothing. Then, the hairs on the back of my neck prickled and I looked up. A meteor was headed straight for me. I gasped, looking back at Theo. There was no way I could get out of there in time, much less myself and Theo. In a split second, I threw her body over his, and closed my eyes. Before my world went black, my mind registered that I wasn’t dead. The meteor had fallen through me, but I was trapped. Trapped in a hard, sticky substance that seemed to… glow? I didn’t know it at the time, but that was the meteor that changed my life forever. In more ways than just one.
