I play with my pencil, not focusing on the ELA lesson like I should be. I’m already a whiz at reading and writing, so why pay attention to something that you already know and is incredibly boring to relearn? I’m thinking up a story in my head, about a girl… and her sister, who’s evil. I do that a lot. Zoning out and building books in my mind. “Evelyn, could you read the first page for us please?” My ELA teacher, Mrs. Smith says, walking up to my desk. My head immediately snaps up. “O-of course,” I stutter, my face beginning to blush violently. “Um, I noticed several weird things about surfboarding cat. Thing number one: He was a surfboarding cat. Thing number two: He was wearing a T-shirt. It said ‘Cats rule, dogs drool.” I continue reading until the page is finished. When I look up, the class is staring at me, their mouthes dropped in shock. Mrs. Smith clears her through. “Ahem, uh, very nice, Evelyn,” she glances around. “Now who would like to read next?” She calls on Alexandra and I continue the story in my head about the girl and her evil sister. Alexandra stumbles a lot on really simple words like “Seriously” and “opinion”. I get that those are harder for some people, and suddenly I understand why they were staring at me. They were surprised that me, quiet in class but loud on the field, soccer-player Evelyn could be good at something other than scoring goals or running. They were surprised I could be smart. Most jocks were not necessarily A+ awarding students. I was different.
