A boy by the name of Gus goes against his father, who gambles and has now put their family into a large amount of debt. His grandfather steps up to help him, but as they talk to Gus's father, they soon realize that something supernatural is going on. After consulting a few texts and the village chief, they discover that far south of the land of Nomasia, there is a great beast whose heart can cure any ailment, but its whereabouts remain unknown. Gus sets out on his journey, but his grandfather suddenly faces a looming deadline. He begins to glow purple, and is diagnosed with 'Kynopsix Sickness,' and has only weeks to live. With two major problems growing ever more dangerous, he sets out on his journey full of hope. He quickly finds a caravan with well-trained guards, who teach him how to fight, so that he can defend himself from the creatures of Nomasia and beyond. After a sad goodbye, he again travels northwards, only to be faced with another problem. Ahead of him is a great jungle! To both the east and the west, it seems to extend for miles, and so he decides to go through. As night comes closer, he loses his way, and a strange old man appears in front of him. After some back-and-forth conversation, he reveals that he is in fact Gus's grandfather, who has been following him the entire time and was never actually sick, only wanting to not hinder Gus in his quest with his old age. He tells his grandson of how proud he is of him, and leaves the following morning, after showing Gus an animal trail he can follow to go further north and out of the jungle. He is ambushed and attacked many times, but eventually makes it out of the jungle. He checks his map to find that he is very close to where he should start looking. He finds yet more monsters, but none of them seem like the great beast in the text. He quickly slays everything nearby, but it is to no avail. The beast is not to be seen! But as the moon begins to come out, he hears a great rumble from behind him. He turns around, and there it is! Right before his eyes, the great beast! It looks sleek and powerful, with a shell and large spikes along a lengthy tail. With glowing eyes and large fangs, it is an unnerving figure to behold, even more so because of the visible beating of a gigantic heart inside it's chest. He begins to fight, and when they exchange blows, he can nearly feel the incredible malice it feels. It seems almost intelligent, at least more so than any other beast he has fought. When he attacks it again, he can feel it readying a powerful attack. Barely weakened, the beast seems as if it will never be slain. It unleashes it's attack, and his grandfather jumps out of the bushes to block a dark beam of energy coming from the beast's heart with a shining gold spear. He looks at Gus and throws him a silvery sword, and together they fight. His new weapon pierces through the beast's armor far more easily, and after a lengthy battle, it finally falls to the floor, still. Gus's grandfather is overcome with wounds, and when Gus gruesomely cuts out the heart, his grandfather refuses to let Gus use it on him. After a long and heartfelt moment, Gus's grandfather dies. Weeping, Gus begins his journey home. It takes many weeks, but with his blade and the feeling of guilt from his grandfather's sacrifice, he fights harder than ever. When he reaches his father at last, he seems wrathful toward the villagers, angrily muttering, but once Gus uses the power of the heart, he seems to heal. He quickly creates a plan to get him out of his gambling debt, and they sell the gigantic heart to traveling merchants for an extraordinary sum. After Gus tells his father of his grandfather's sacrifice, he weeps and they mourn for weeks. The money from the heart was enough to pay off the debt, and allow them to live very comfortably for several years, until Gus has children of his own going on adventures, and he sits back quietly in a rocking chair and thinks about how all the years have gone by, and the wonderful memories he's made, until, at age 93, he finally dies happy.
