A: Although I didn't tell many people, Peridot was diagnosed with fatty liver disease last June. Her symptoms had first begun to show in December of 2021. She had monthly vet visits and last August we found out that she also had cancer. In mid-February this year, she began having seizures, and so my family made the difficult decision to have her put down. She was at least six years old. -- Q: Will you get another parakeet? A: No, at least not while I'm living at home. -- Q: How old are your birds? A: I adopted Cheesy in August of 2020, and my vet believes he is at least 15. I got Ritchie from a breeder in February of 2022, and he is around two years old. Perlita is from another breeder and she is between 5-6 months old. -- Q: Why did you choose a black-capped conure? A: I didn't really. At first, I was planning on getting a kakariki or another cockatiel, but I met Perlita as a little baby at a bird fair in March and fell in love. After two more visits, we brought her home in late April. -- Q: Which of your birds is your favorite? A: They are all my favorites in different ways. Cheesy is my favorite when I'm working on homework or just want a calm bird to sit by me. Ritchie is my favorite when I have friends over and want a hands-on bird that enjoys being flipped upside-down and doing tricks. Perlita is my favorite when I want a cuddly bird or want to practice flight recall training. -- Q: Do your birds know any tricks? A: Yes! Cheesy can spin, wave, and fly to me. Ritchie can spin, give high fives, play dead, and is learning to fly to me. Perlita can spin and fly to me very well. She actually has the best recall of any of my birds and follows me into different rooms with ease. -- Q: Do you plan on getting any more birds in the future? A: No, not anytime soon. -- Q: Are your birds' wings clipped? A: Perlita came to me with lightly clipped wings, but my other birds are flighted. -- Photos: Models: Cheesy, Ritchie, Perlita Music: I'll Follow the Sun, Blackbird, Here Comes the Sun (The Beatles)
