Tress with thick, twisted trunks cackled in the gloom of the night. The ground was wet and sticky. Rain fell from the thundering clouds, the drobs as heavy as bowling-balls. Lola took a sharp breath. She sprinted through the mud and dirt as the shouts got louder. They were coming. She skidded across the muddy path, into the depths of the wood. Lola jumped, as her foot splashed into a pudddle. Why now? After all she'd been through. Why now was she going to die? She paused. The only noises she could now hear were the sounds of rain, thunder, and her own breaths. Then another shout. They were still coming. Lola bit her lip; she dived between trees as the bellowing noises grew louder. 'Please, please,' she muttered, 'Please get me out of here.' The shouts turned into laughs. They were coming. Lola carried on. She knew they were going to get her. She knew it would all be over. 3... 2... 1... Lola blinked. Her world wasn't plunged into darkness: she was still alive. She breathed as oxygen slowly drifted back into her lungs. She was alive. A smile appeared on Lola's grubby face. That was the first time she had smiled in weeks. A warm glow of happiness gleamed in her chest. Then a scuttle. A rustle. A breath. Lola was not alone. Someone was with her...
