may be working on adding more, we'll see. there is a really major death in the story, so please move forward with caution. there is a somewhat happy ending though. mnemosyne, or shortened to mneme. they/them, nonbinary aroace Mnemosyne was born from the stars, an unearthly being one may consider to be unique and like nothing they've seen before, but they were one of a thousand. Created each to fill their purpose, the one who created them, oh so far away, did not give them a personality. A job. An appearance. A name. That was all they felt their children deserved. Mnemosyne, the second eldest, was given the job of helping those let go of their lost ones, letting them have the closure they needed to feel safe. They came to these animals in a dream, their appearance warm and comforting to anyone who saw them, and summoned the soul of those lost to let them say their goodbyes once and for all. But, Mnemosyne couldn't see the reason for themself. They'd never experienced loss. They were a soulless being, all their love and affection crafted by another. Mnemosyne stopped doing their role, letting their paws carry them to the earth to find themselves. Mnemosyne, at first, only saw a place of sorrow and dismay. Abandoned corridors, hungry animals, and empty of the feelings they'd been taught the earth loved so dearly. It was, in one of these empty places, Mnemosyne met Leora. She was, like the world around her, colorless and void of the beauty Mnemosyne was used to in the cosmos. But, something about Leora, felt like a brilliant ray of light in the hopeless land. Her eyes, windows to the soul, were a shade of bright purple, a color found so brilliantly in nature but so limited in the city of which Leora lived. Mnemosyne felt themselves inclined to talk to her, tracing the feline wherever she went. They finally got their wish when Leora found herself alone in a peculiar place; an abandoned shopping mall. Unbeknownst to Mnemosyne, Leora spent many a day exploring these places, seeing locations reclaimed by nature and left behind so similar to how they were before. While Mnemosyne found them disgusting reminders of the past, they followed Leora inside before shortly showing themselves. Leora, more surprised than anything, was quick to introduce themselves and apologize for intruding. She'd never seen someone like Mnemosyne before. Mnemosyne told Leora that they weren't there to get them into trouble, but were curious what they were doing. Leora explained her interest in the places, something that took so long to craft just left behind, and she loved to photograph and let them live on in pictures of the past. Mnemosyne, surprised like Leora had been by them, followed Leora along as she explored. Soon every exploration included the mystical creature. Them and Leora got along so well, they became close friends, exploring everywhere they could together. No one could pull them apart. Life doesn't last forever, and not everyone's ends complete. It was a particularly snowy day, in the early days of January. Snow clumped together outside the window of a mold-infested ski resort, but it didn't deter the two felines from investigating further inside. Abandoned for years, but everything left behind in a hurry. Leora had been planning it out for months now. The resort, so lost to time, was high up in the mountaintops. Neither her nor Mnemosyne could predict how far gone the building truly was. Upon even first glance one could tell you it would be a harder day than expected. Leora was persistent. This was a goal of hers. Mnemosyne was quick to follow behind, never a skeptic of her actions. They made it together to the third floor, following a wobbly staircase up. Above, on the fourth floor, contained the room that held a couple decade old pool, plaguing the third floor with leaky water damage and mildew. It was nothing like the two of them had seen in any of their previous adventures. Leora pushed forward though, taking her camera into every possible room. Mnemosyne was close behind, taking in how much truly remained, damaged, but still there. It was only at the sound of an ear-breaking scream that they lifted their eyes back to Leora. The water had weakened the wood over time, and it had collapsed underneath her weight. Mnemosyne moved as quickly as their paws would carry them, knowing they had to do something. The floor below Mnemosyne's paws was nothing but a hole now, a hole that had swallowed Leora whole. Mnemosyne made a dash for the staircase, but by the time she'd arrived, the collapse had grown. Pieces of the red carpet slipped down onto the wreckage, a mess of heartbreak and hopelessness. Mnemosyne tried to search for Leora, but their paws were stardust. No matter what they did, the wood wouldn't budge. Why would it? They were weightless. But those eyes; the ones Mnemosyne had fallen for; peeked out from the rubble. Leora was there. They jumped over, eyes watering unlike they had ever done before. Leora's voice was +
[CONTINUATION FROM ABOVE] weak as she spoke. "I- I shouldn't have brought us here, Mnemosyne, I'm so sorry." "No! I should have kept us safe, Leora. I'm the one who cannot die, who cannot be hurt, I could have tried harder to keep you safe." They begged, staring deeply at Leora, feeling pain unlike any wound for their close friend. "Who do I contact? How can I save you now..?" Leora gave a weak smile. "It's my mistake. We're too far away. But, thank you, Mnemosyne, for the fun. You'll let everyone know what happened, won't you?" "I won't have to, you can tell them yourself, Leora, don't give up!" Mnemosyne tried to reason, but another rumble came from the building. "Leora! We have to go! Please, try anything, I beg you.." She looked up, eyes watering, and gave a push with her paws. Leora was stuck, and Mnemosyne wasn't strong enough to move her back legs from the collapse. Another creak emerged from the cracks, and world seemed to turn on its head. Mnemosyne wouldn't move, standing by Leora as everything around them melted into the ground. It took only seconds before everything was gone. This had been it. The loss, the pain, the torture of loosing someone so close to you. If Mnemosyne had just been normal, not some thing from the stars, they could have saved Leora. She could be standing right here, safe and sound. But, through their ears, an old forgotten memory reformed. Their purpose; to let those say goodbye to those they loved. Mnemosyne let her paws touch the fallen earth, and lifted her head to the now sky above her. "Please, please return Leora, even just as a soul... I'm not ready to say goodbye.." It wouldn't work. Mnemosyne could only summon in others dreams. How could she ever see Leora again? They never slept. They weren't normal like Leora. Mnemosyne tried, a single last thing... "I'll give you everything." They whispered. "My powers, my soul, my heart, just to see her again. One last time, to say goodbye." From the earth emerged a familiar face. Leora, her eyes shining with the same ambition they had that morning. Although her fur seemed a bit shinier then before, no one could deny it was her. Mnemosyne may not have had any powers, but they had the only thing they'd ever need.
