Laghk sprinted through the forest, the wind whipping through her fur, and the dead leaves crackling underpaw. Laghk threw back her head, and howled. An answering call sounded from a thicket a few trees away. A second wolf burst from the underbrush, her red fur blazed in the fresh sunlight, the white zigzagging lines a dazzling spectrum in contrast to the light. The wolf’s amber eyes blazed orange as she skidded to a halt, out of breath, next to Laghk. “Spice, what is it?” Laghk growled, her voice deep and rasping. “It’s the Red Moon pack, they’re attacking, AGAIN!” Laghk whipped around, eyes narrowed in the direction that Spice had came from. “Did anyone follow you?” She asked, hackles rising in alarm. Spice shook her head. “Not that I’m aware. I thought I saw one of them watch me leave, but I never caught their sce- AH!” Three wolves exploded from the underbrush, they surrounded the two, ears laid back and teeth bared. The acrid tang of Red Moon pack struck Laghk’s nose, and she suddenly felt it hard to breathe. “Looks like we’ve caught ourselves some escapees.” The first wolf growled, her eyes glinting with malice. “What d’you reckon we should do with them, Spirk?” The second wolf asked, a hungry look in his eyes. The third wolf took a step back, suddenly looking unsure. The first wolf suddenly spun around, and slashed her claws across the third wolf’s muzzle. The third wolf yelped, and fell to the ground, blood dripping from the fresh wound. “We have no time for hesitation, Mestagen.” She growled, bending down low to look straight into the wolf’s terrified eyes. “Do you understand?” She barked sharply. “Y-yes, Spirk.” Mestagen stammered, pressing himself low to the ground with a whimper. “Good.” Spirk spun around sharply, and her claws sank into the blood-spattered ground. “Now,” she snarled. “We attack.” Before Laghk had time to register, Spirk and the other wolf had launched themselves at her and Spice, pinning them to the ground. Laghk felt Spirk’s claws dig into her back. Tears blurred Laghk’s vision. And then, everything went black.
