Samuel Johnson was an English author born in 1709. Best known for compiling the first major English Dictionary in 1755, Johnson today is widely regarded for his defiance of social standards, being an anti-racist, a proto-feminist, and an activist against many of the evils of his time, such as colonialism, animal cruelty, and the discrimination of marginalised groups. Though forgotten by much of 21st-Century scholarship, Johnson is still popularly remembered in Lichfield, the town of his birth. ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ➢ Note: when I say "People of Lichfield," I more or less mean "The Samuel Johnson Society!" However, if I used that term, the rhythm would be terrible. To anybody from Lichfield reading this - sorry for treating you as any sort of storybook race of people dedicated to the Willow! ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ➢ Want to learn more about Samuel Johnson? Have a look at my project about him here! https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/681282966/ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ➢ Fun fact: almost all colours used in this project are taken from actual pictures - yes, including Samuel Johnson's hair! In the 19th Century, there was some dude that collected hair, and it was discovered that he had three locks of Johnson's hair. Curiously, only one of these still remains in its case - the other two were either lost or stolen. Maybe it just fell out. Maybe I took it. Who knows. ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ➢ I was going to be able to see the Fifth Willow, and the remnants of the Fourth! I was in Lichfield for a day, and I had planned on going to the park by Stowe Pool to see it - however, my parents cut the trip short, so I didn't get to. It was sad. For a long time, I had been planning on making a project like this, using pictures of the willow that I was actually going to take myself; in a way, this is my attempt at something close to that. Maybe one day, I can go back and see it! ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ➢ If you scrolled down this far, then have a good day!

The way I compiled it, however, was a bit more complicated - each tree (including the background ones) came from different images; therefore, all of the positioning, Vector art, and composition is of my own. Credit, however, to Giovanni Canaletto, whose paintings included some of the trees that I took as bases. ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ➢ Some of the people pictured next to the willow are actually supposed to be different people! The first is Samuel Johnson, the third is Francis Barber's great-granddaughter, Sarah Barber, the fourth is Kevin, who is really cool, and the last is me, because I can do that. I don't know who the ones from the second are, though. ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ➢ Tags: #Parallax #Art #Music #Stories #Trees #Lichfield #Willow #Samuel #Johnson #England
