During his residence there, he wrote his famed Dictionary, the first major one for the English language. It is the last of Johnson's surviving London homes, and is today recognised as a museum to Johnson and his circle alongside the Johnson Birthplace Museum in Lichfield. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ↳ The attic, or the garret, as it is more properly known, is where Johnson had his setup for the Dictionary. Today, the room isn't exactly as historical as the rest of the building - during the Second World War, it was destroyed by German bombs! Luckily, the rest of the building remained intact. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ↳ Fun fact: Samuel Johnson's most famous cat, Hodge, lived here! Despite cultural aversion to cats during 18th-Century England, Johnson was a great lover of cats, having many over his lifetime. To this day, there is a small statue of a black cat outside Gough Square, sitting atop a dictionary. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ↳ Want to hear more about Samuel Johnson?
