It means extracting someone’s secrets. The origin of the phrase however, is from the 15th century, where a parasite that lived in noses was common in France, and people were embarrassed to tell their doctors that they had the parasite. The doctors then had to force it out of them, creating the phrase: Tirer les vers du nez.
