In this world, most people possess a stone that provides magical powers, while those who are poor do not. These stones are used as currency to pay for goods and services (with the amount of energy you have which is usually a lot), and losing or giving up a stone can result in a significant drop in social status. Kings and queens were once created by combining many stones, but the people overthrew them.
