Luna Tuesday, August 30 I watch as my brother Sol gasps with excitement. He’s been waiting for this for weeks, and the envelope is finally here. He pulls the letter out of the envelope. It’s printed on fancy stationery. It looks official, but it also looks friendly and inviting, as if coming from a good friend instead of a prestigious school. A month or so ago, Sol applied to the Isle of Jade Academy, hoping to be accepted as a scholarship student. While it isn’t rare for IJA to provide scholarships to especially smart students, there are still quite a few wealthy families that go to the school (in fact, it’s probably around fifty-fifty), and a scholarship isn’t guaranteed. The school is perfect for Sol, as he has far surpassed what the teachers in our small village can provide to him. “I got in!” Sol shouts. “Of course you did, sweetheart,” our mother, Snapdragon, says. I’m excited for my brother’s new opportunity, but I’m sad that he’s leaving. He’s my main companion. “Oh, and Luna! I have the best surprise for you!” Sol announces excitedly, pausing for the pure drama of it. “You’re coming with me!” I should be elated. I should be packing right now. But instead, a wave of anxiety washes over me, and I sink down onto the sofa. Sol’s face falls. “Is everything okay?” he asks. “Yeah, yeah. Everything’s fine. I’m just worried, that’s all.” “Come on, it’ll be fine!” Maybe Sol is right. Maybe I do worry too much. Maybe everything will be okay. I just have a sinking feeling about this. But then again, I have a sinking feeling about almost everything. “Okay,” I sigh, flashing a small smile. “Let’s get packing.”
