Most of you now might know I have 6 'coturnix' quails. Well, it turns out, they are actually button quails! Sadly, we had to say goodbye to one of our 6 quails, 'Chick'. Chick was our last chick to hatch, and was a incredible member of our quail flock. For those wondering; Chick had splayed legs from the moment he was born, and was really weak. He could externally pip on his own so we had to safety hole the air sac for him. Luckily, his legs got stronger and we were hopeful. Sadly, Chick passed away from a bottom hip (connected to leg) deformation. It made it hard for him to sometimes walk, and we suspected pain from walking for him. We made him a 'wheelchair' as when he reached the age of 6 months, he began having real big problems with walking. He had his mate, Moppy, who was loyal and stayed by his side daily, and even saved most of her treats, (mostly mealworms) for him. So using the wheelchair, he was able to walk around the pen from time to time, and he had his own personal bowl because of the other 5 quails that would constantly squabble over the food. His deformation seemed to worsen over time, and we knew what was best for him. We took him to the vets, and they took x-rays and examinations, and diagnosed him with the condition. He was going to go through much more pain once he gets older, and will gradual lose consciousness of his lower half. We put him down. This was because we just couldn't bear seeing him suffer like that. Moppy grieved very hard, and refused to eat for a whole week. We did end up having to feed her using a syringe. She is doing so much better, but she misses Chick as much as we do. Chick, rest in peace. 2022-2023 </3 We still have his wheelchair and feathers from him. He was a beautiful kind male. I intentionally wanted to come back to scratch after my break, but Chick's passing really affected my productivity. I hope you all understand, and I'll be making more updates on the rest of the farm very soon.
