Byrrd dove out of the clouds, her wings spread wide. Confidence turned to fear as she realized she had no breaks. Landing roughly on the ground, she shook her head. Turning to one side, she saw River Rock rushing toward her. “Are you okay?” he asked. “Yes, I’m okay,” Byrrd muttered as River Rock helped her up. “I don’t think you can fly with half a tail,” said River Rock as he examined her wings. “You wings aren’t hurt.” “I know,” murmured Byrrd. River Rock turned and started walking, Byrrd close behind. They were going on a walk in the forest. “Want me to tell you a story?” asked River Rock. “Sure,” replied Byrrd. “A long time ago, way before the war between Cloud and Light Flame’s herd, Light Flame Herd —LFH as I call it— was divided into two groups. Each group had normal mares and stallions, but one group was good, the other bad. In the bad group, Light Flame was born. When he was just a colt, an entire group of colts and fillies were on his side. Deadly Acid—I mean, Luna— was in that group. She joined his group because she had no idea that the group would become a herd. When Light Flame was a yearling, he took over the herd and it became fully bad. War after war could have been stopped if it weren’t for Light Flame. That very spot”—River Rock pointed to a clearing to their right—“was the first battlefield to ever be used. It was used to teach foals about our herd and Light Flame Herd’s history. But, when I was being taught this, something happened nobody would ever believe happened.” “What happened?” asked Byrrd. “Well, a mare with fresh scratches all over stumbled into the clearing. She was obviously a cast-out of Light Flame Herd, and she surprised the entire group of foals and an elder. The mare was very sick and so she was forbidden to be touched or even looked at. Nobody heard of her since then.” “That’s terrible,” announced Byrrd. “I know,” replied River Rock. “We never held another class there again.” Byrrd nodded slowly.
