Chapter 6 I hear scratching of leaves in the distance, but it is not Becky. Becky is beside me, tending to her chick. I hear the clucking of hens. But it is not Becky. Becky raises her head and lets out a tiny gasp. “More hens!” She says, standing. Peep lets out a beeping sound. “Yes, I know, you’re cold.” Becky sits back down. “Why don’t you go tell the hens they can come over here?” I ask her. “I can’t leave Peep.” She shakes her head. “He wants to stay here. He needs to be kept warm.” And so does my egg. So, instead, I lift my head and let out a long crow, telling the hens they are welcome to join our small flock. Two minutes later, they arrive near our tree. “Who are you?” The lead hen asks. “I am Benigno.” I smile proudly, wondering if they have noticed my egg. “I am Harriet.” She introduces herself. “I am the leader of my flock.” “You could join ours.” I offer. Harriet looks back at the four other hens with her. They look at me. “I’ve always wanted a rooster to be part of our flock!” A reddish-brown one smiles. “Let’s join his flock.” “Alright.” Harriet nods. She is an orange-red with slightly white tailfeathers, probably a Rhode Island Red. “I’m Buttercup.” A hen steps forward. She is yellow, like me. “I’m Daisy.” An Isa Brown hen says. The other two introduce themselves as Dandelion and Amelia. I can’t believe it! I have my own flock! And it is starting to grow! I can’t wait for my favorite member to hatch…
