Chapter 1, You're in big trouble, Malone I hate my parents. I know hate is a harsh word, but if your parents did what mine did, you would hate yours too. They abandoned me. I don't know the details, but my adoptive mom found me and took care of me. I know I should be grateful that she found me, but the way she treats me, I sometimes wish she had left me to die. "Malone, get down here now!" She yelled. "Coming, Sofia!" I yelled back. That's another thing I don't like about her. She named me Malone. Take away the M, and you get alone. It's kind of fitting, though, because my adoptive parents hate me, and I don't have any friends. I raced downstairs. "What do you want?" "Well, first of all, call me mom. Not Sofia." "But you're not my mom!" I said, my voice starting to rise. "You should be grateful that your dad and I raised you." "Whatever. Mom." I grumbled defiantly "The real reason you are here though," she said. "Is because the principal called me and told me what you did today at school." "What are you talking about?" I asked innocently. "You know what I'm talking about, but if you're going to play possum, I guess I'll just tell you." She said. "You pulled the fire alarm just to give you ten extra minutes to work on your astronomy project." "But I needed to." I said "No, you wanted to." She shot back. "But I learned something really cool about a planet called earth." I protested. "It was shielded with a force field three days after I was born. That can't just be a coincidence." I said. "Maybe I'm from earth?" "Oh, don't be ridiculous." She scoffed. "How could you get from earth to all the way over here?" "Anyway, you're in big trouble, Malone." "You're grounded for a week. No friends, no school, no meals other than dinner, and I've decided to go on vacation with your dad, without you. after your punishment ends, you can make your own meals while we're gone and ride your bike to school. we will be gone for a month. Any questions?" "Nope" I replied glumly. "Great." she replied "your punishment starts now."
