Chapter 2 Under Sofia's mattress The week of being grounded passed by slowly. for most of it, I just stared at the clock waiting for dinner. On the last day of my being grounded, I asked Sofia, "Where would you hide something important?" She answered, "Why would I tell you?" "Because, what if something really bad happens to you while you're on vacation?" "Just shut up." She snapped. "Then I'll just guess until I get it right." "I said, shut up!" She snapped again. "Hmmm, let's see." I said, enjoying myself immensely. "In the attic, under a floor board, hmm... aha, under a potted plant?" "You'll never guess it!" she said with an amused expression on her face. I scraped the back of my mind, thinking hard. "In a secret compartment on your desk, under a rock outside?" "I wouldn't tell you even if you were right." Her amused smile getting bigger by the moment. If I were a psycho, really mean, and I hated my son. Where would I hide something really important? I thought. "Aha," I cried happily. " Under your mattress?" Sofia's smile vanished, and then just as quickly it came back. "Nope." She answered. "Aww darn, I guess I'll just give up." I said, I knew it was hiding there, but I couldn't let her know that I knew. She grinned happily, thinking, I didn't notice her mistake. I left the room, planning. Later that day, at dinner, I thought, "Maybe if Sofia has a secret stash where she hides important things, maybe my adoptive dad, Cameron, has one too?" "Hey, Cameron, you hiding anything under your mattress?" "N-no." He stuttered, clearly surprised that I had guessed where his hiding spot was. "OK, I believe you." I said, maybe a little too quickly. He stared at me suspiciously. "You do, huh?" "Of course, you would never lie to me, wait, you wouldn't, right?" "Of course not." He answered quickly, not wanting to lose my trust. "I would never lie to you." "Great!" I said, digging into my food, my plan fully formed.
