Chapter One “Ivy! Come here right now!” Ivy was sitting underneath a tree, gently touching a flower to help it grow with her leafspeak. “What is it, Mother?” Ivy asked the female dragon coming towards her. Ivy was a LeafWing dragonet, with green scales and light green wings. She had splotches of gold all over her body, which made a beautiful contrast against her green scales. Cedar said she was the most beautiful dragonet he’d ever seen, and Ivy beamed with pride every time he said it. “You know you’re not supposed to be out here,” Mint hissed, snatching up Ivy and carrying her back into the huge, hollow tree that they lived in. “But there’s no pretty flowers in there,” Ivy protested. “As the future-” Mint sucked in a breath and refused to finish her sentence. “As the future what?” Ivy asked curiously. “Never mind,” said Mint, dropping her on the floor. “Pine will be home soon, and Cedar.” Ivy bounded up to her room and sat down on her hammock near the window. She smiled at the picture she’d drawn for Cedar, her brother, the other day. It was of them hugging each other, Ivy fitting perfectly between Cedar’s wings. She loved Cedar a lot. He was her older brother, a kooky, lovable idiot when he was around her, and sensible and fun around her parents. He was also very protective of Ivy but allowed her to escape from their strict mother once in a while and go outside. “Ivy!” Mint called from downstairs. “They’re home!” Ivy leaped off her hammock and bolted downstairs. “Cedar!” she cried, crashing straight into her big brother. “Ivy!” Cedar hugged his little sister. “I missed you!” Ivy squealed. “What am I, roasted root?” her father asked, smiling. Ivy leaped from Cedar and gave him a hug too. “I love you too, Dad.” She told him firmly. “But I love Cedar best.” “Can’t beat that!” Cedar grinned. “What’s for dinner, Mum?” Mint looked disapproving. “Didn’t you bring anything home?” she asked. “Oh, a few pigeons…” Cedar laughed as Ivy leaped on him. Pigeons were her favourite kind of food. “I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you!” she squealed. Cedar handed his mother, father and sister a pigeon, then ate his in two quick bites while their mother asked their father, Pine, how his day had been. “Did you see Clover?” Ivy interrupted, staring at Cedar. “Yes,” said Cedar, smiling, “And she’s very excited to have you over for her birthday tomorrow. What are you going to give her?” “I’m growing this HUGE bunch of clovers, of course!” Ivy exclaimed. Cedar was about to reply when Mint butted in. “Ivy, you can’t go to Clover’s tomorrow. I’ve arranged with her mother for you to go next week.” “Next week?” Ivy asked, her eyes wide. “But why, Mum? Clover and I have been planning this for ages!” “We’re taking you to visit… someone.” Replied her mother. “Sorry,” she added, seeing Ivy’s distraught face. She and Pine exchanged looks. “Okay,” Ivy whined. “Where are we going? Why? How long?” “No more questions!” said Mint. “Now eat up.” Ivy did, her eyes brimming with tears. Mint saw and wished that Ivy would act a little older about these things. Pine saw and wished that she was easier to manage. Cedar saw, and with all his heart wished he could make her so happy that she’d never cry again. But Ivy was a young dragonet. She had to learn how tough it was in the real dragon world of Pantala.
