Well, here it is, the rematch. You may have gotten your PPL, but you are not done. You have spent two years training for your instrument rating, and it all comes down to another checkride with the G-Man. Will you succeed, or will you be grounded by low clouds forever...
Glossary of Terms: Rigidity in Space - This states that a rotating gyroscope acts independently of outside motion. Basically, the entire airplane is rotating around the gyroscope. Gyroscopic Precession - Any force placed upon a rotating gyroscope acts as if it were placed 90 degrees ahead in the plane of rotation. It's useful for determining rate of turn and roll. ILS (Instrument Landing System) - A system comprising of two VHF radio beacons and approach lighting to guide an aircraft to the runway in low visibility. RNAV (Area Navigation) - Another means of approaching an airport in bad weather, but it uses GPS instead of radio signals, and is usually only considered a non-precision approach. IFR Clearance - A clearance consisting of a clearance limit, route to the clearance limit, assigned altitude(s), departure communications frequency, and discrete transponder code. SID (Standard Instrument Departure) - A published route for departures from busy airports, using radio navigation, GPS, or both. ODP (Obstacle Departure Procedure) - A published list of takeoff minima and required turns for aircraft departing an airport. STAR (Standard Arrival) - A published route for arrivals into busy airports, using radio navigation, GPS, or both. IAP (Instrument Approach Procedure) - A published procedure that defines different means of performing IFR approaches to different runways at an airport. Some types of approaches include the aforementioned ILS and RNAV approaches. Holding - A procedure in which an aircraft performs a racetrack pattern in respect to either a waypoint or a distance from a VOR. Usually done with right-hand turns, and the inbound leg is usually measured in either time or distance. CFII (Certified Flight Instructor - Instrument) - A flight instructor who is certified to teach instrument students
