hi everyone ;D august slipped away like a moment in time...and now leader apps are here!! welcome, one and all, to scratch writing camp's leader applications for november 2023! Here's the remix tree: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/887937705/remixtree ⁂ Credits ⁂ Designed on Canva SWC logo by @oceanspIash Music is A Million Dreams (instrumental) from The Greatest Showman <3 Official SWC Records can be found here: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/post/6568199 ⁂ FAQ Continuation (read the Notes & Credits first) ⁂ 12. How will I know if my application has been seen? The hosts are going to be loving all applications when we've seen them. We will view applications via the remix tree. (Also, I’ll get a notification whenever you remix, so there’s no need to link your application in the comments.) 13. Are collaborative apps allowed? Collaborative applications, where two or more people apply through one app, are not allowed. If you use any art or code by someone other than yourself, remember to clearly give credit in your project description! 14. Can I choose cos before I get accepted? It’s not okay to choose cos before you’re accepted as a leader - you may look at apps in advance but you can’t ask them to co with you or make a pact with friends to lead together. If you do get accepted, guidelines will be given on how to choose co-leaders. 15. Why are letters of recommendation prohibited? We prohibited letters of recommendation primarily because they favor those who are already familiar with the community. They don't serve much of a purpose, and a letter of rec could bias (particularly new) leaders looking to choose co-leaders. We also hope to avoid potential issues that could arise - as any situation involving writing opinions on multiple people can escalate rapidly! 16. What is the purpose of the word cap on applications? And what counts towards it? Having guidelines for word count will encourage applicants to be more concise, as well as make applications easier for hosts to read and judge. Just the answers, NOT including the excerpt that's in question 4 or any other writing in the app. If your app is formatted like an interview, where there's a story woven in with the answers, that will count towards the word cap :) 17. What is the Cabin That Will Not Win? The Cabin That Will Not Win (TCTWNW) is a cabin that is removed from the leaderboard and is separate from the competitive aspect of SWC - it's designed to be relaxed and help its participants focus on personal goals instead of cabin points. TCTWNW can be assigned to any genre cabin. 18. What's the purpose of question 9 (about cabin atmosphere)? In addition to being judged as a regular application question, the cabin atmosphere blurb is meant to give future campers an idea of what each cabin will be like beyond themes! This will allow campers to be able to sign up for an experience tailored closer to their personal objectives in SWC, and help leaders to choose co-leaders with similar goals. Cabin (co)leaders will have until a certain date to collaboratively write their official blurb, which will then be included in the camper signups project for all campers to see. If a blurb is not submitted in time, the one written by the cabin leader in their application will be inputted instead. We hope to have cabins with a variety of different atmospheres! - By applying to be leader, you agree that in the event that you have to go inactive, you let the hosts know, transfer studio ownership and take any other necessary actions. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask them in the comments below <3
⁂ FAQ ⁂ (Please read *everything*, whether or not you've led before.) 1. What is SWC? SWC, or Scratch Writing Camp, is a triannual virtual writing camp which runs for the months of March, July and November. When you sign up you set a word goal for yourself, and try to reach that by the end of camp. For every literary piece you write, you get to update your word count! There's also a competitive aspect with cabin points (there are fifteen cabins - you'll be in one), which you can win through activities and competition. This session will run from the 1st of November to the 30th of November - and it's online, so you can be there 5 minutes or 5 hours a day, at any time! This is a great place for members of the Scratch writing community to meet skilled, like-minded and creative people in one of the biggest and most exciting events currently on Scratch. Whether you've been honing your skills for years or you're a complete writing beginner, there's a place for you here <3 2. What are the responsibilities of a (co)leader? All (co)leaders must fulfill the following responsibilities: - Maintaining a healthy balance between SWC and real life and encouraging the same for campers - Answering questions and concerns regarding SWC IF they are confident in their answer - Taking any and all questions and concerns (theirs or others' if they are not confident in the answer) regarding SWC to the hosts - Updating word counts in a timely manner and ensuring that all on-scratch records are up-to-date - Overseeing the cabin and acting as a supervisor - Contributing to cabin planning and development 3. When is my (co)leader application due? 11:59 PM UTC on September 16th. 4. When will you be choosing (co)leaders? After applications close on September 16th, the other hosts and I will decide the leaders, and we'll notify all of the leaders within the next few days. Co-leaders will be chosen by the leaders, not us, between the 16th of September and the 1st of October. 5. How do co-leaders work? Each cabin (see below for a list!) needs one or two co-leaders, with three in some cases where a leader would prefer a bigger team. More information will be shared with selected leaders. If you're only interested in applying for co, please mention that in your app. Applications not chosen to be leaders will automatically be open to getting chosen as co! You are not allowed to advertise your application to the chosen leaders, and we will be monitoring this. If you aren't selected as a co-leader, we would advise that you keep your app up even after the deadline has passed - sometimes situations will call for leaders to need to choose another co, and you could be that person! 6. What are the differences between leader and co-leader? Leaders have more responsibility than the co-leaders. They are 'in charge' of the cabin, which could potentially mean making more decisions, especially regarding theming and early development of the cabin. The leader assumes the role of the delegator in that they have the ability to delegate any tasks regarding the cabin to both their co-leaders and themselves. They ensure equity in terms of tasks within their own cabin. Leadership teams are responsible for figuring out their own system of keeping track of their cabin word counts ( https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/564931660/ ) 7. What are the cabin names? Currently, there are 15 cabins - however, this session cabins will be interest-based, meaning you can suggest any cabin from the past or a completely new one in your application. The cabin list will be finalized during the selection of leaders! For reference, here are all the cabins that have existed in the past: Action – Adventure – Bizarro Fiction (Bi-Fi) – Classics – Contemporary – Dystopian – Fairy Tales – Fanfiction (Fan-Fi) – Fantasy – Folklore – Historical Fiction (Hi-Fi) – Horror – Illustrated Fiction (Illu-Fi) – Literary Fiction (Lit-Fi) – Lyric – Mystery – Mythology – Nonfiction (Non-Fi) – Novel – Poem/Poetry – Realistic Fiction (Real-Fi) – Romance – Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) – Script – Short Story – Steampunk – Thriller – Tragedy Official Birdi Stanner Cabin You aren't required to write in the genre of your cabin name! It's simply a name ^^ 8. I've never been a leader and/or participated in SWC before. Can I apply/will more experienced people be chosen over me? We choose only based on how good your application is, with the three main criteria of creativity, personality and answer quality. 9. When will camper signups come out? 12 AM UTC on October 1st, on @Stariqe's profile. Let Starr know on her profile if you'd like to be notified when the project is released! 10. Why do I need to include my timezone? Just to get a sense of when you will be online. If you are uncomfortable sharing your timezone, just state that. 11. How do you communicate with leaders and co-leaders? We have a discussion forum. The rest of the FAQ can be found below the Credits section in the Instructions above!
