His two moms, Mirabai and Juniper(Junie), are both very kind to him, but also shelter him in many ways from the outside world. His sister Melodie has clinical depression and gets very low grades in school. Also living in their small two story house is uncle Hendrix, who has health complications, but is otherwise very funny. They're living happily together, Svyn about to enter his fifth year at his school, when he is visited by a recruiter named Maximus. Maxi tells him he has been specially selected along with 119 other kids his age around the world, to come and study at a special school. After speaking to his moms, they agree he can go. At the new school, Svyn realizes it's not just a school for advanced students, it is a school of magic, with six guilds, necromancer, sorcerer, potioneer, bard, ranger, and paladin. Svyn wants to be a ranger, but is chosen as a necromancer. All the other students at the school despise the necromancer kids, who are seen as dark and immoral because they reanimate the dead. That is, except for svyn's friends, Lumen, Kitty, Truett, and Legend, who he met on his first day there. In his first year at school, he goes through a lot and struggles with magic. Other kids are mean to him for various reasons, which makes him lash out.
