Fireflies: by @crystalizee As the sky darkens, I rush outside. As the golden sunlight fades to a muted purple, shivers run up my spine. It is time for the fireflies. They dart around me. They blink softly with their little flames of light. The grass whispers softly as the breeze blows. I inhale deeply, tasting the moisture in the air. I want this moment to last forever. I need this moment to last forever. It doesn't. "Time to come inside!" my mom calls. I carefully scoop up one of the fireflies, then run back to the cabin. "What were you doing out there?" she asks. I shrug. She thinks I'm crazy, spending so much time outside with all the bugs and poison ivy and heat. And convincing my dad to let us stay in the cabin for a week. We're not supposed to be staying in a cabin. We're supposed to be enjoying the world around it. After dinner, I put my firefly in a jar. I'm not going to keep him forever, just for the night. Then I will let my dreams end. And besides, he'll just be a little reminder that better things are waiting on the other side of the window. For whatever reason, I can't sleep. I toss and turn until about three in the morning, when an owl's call makes me freeze. Slowly, I roll over one last time. My firefly's glow is the last thing I see before I drift away... #writing #story # firefly #fireflies #nature #all
