Harper was spitting as she fought Daniel with Amber right at her side, matching her every step. They both lunged at Daniel, knocking him back further. "Why won't you give up and die?" he countered, swinging a fist at her and aiming to sweep Amber off her legs. "Never!" Harper snarled. "We know what you're after. And you aren't getting it." Daniel stopped, still in a fighting stance. His eyes narrowed, and a smirk quirked his lips up. "Oh, do you now?" he asked smugly. "Then what." Harper narrowed her eyes, opening her mouth to answer, but then she heard a strangled gasp below. She looked down at where Sophia was, still keeping one eye on Daniel, and her eyes widened when she saw the struggle Sophia was going through, looking as if she was about to pass out. Oh no. "What did you do to her?" Harper shouted, jerking back towards Daniel, who straight out grinned. "Are you so sure it was us?" he sneered. "Or has she just been sick her whole life?" "Both!" Amber and Harper shouted at him angrily. Then Harper swung at him, actually getting a good punch at him. She was pretty she broke his nose. Nothing the ruthless man didn't deserve. Taking in a deep breath, Harper swung at him again. **** Sophia's mind was screaming at her to breathe. To get up, to try and help Harper and Amber--to do anything, really. But she found herself fixed limp on the ground, unable to do anything. Than a familiar face peered over her, looking worried. Sophia realized with shock that it was Jake. "You followed me?" she said through gritted teeth, her words strangled with pain. He grimaced. "Sorry. But I couldn't let you go on your own. Look--I can help you, okay?" "I need...my...inhaler." "No you don't," he said, clearing his throat. "Just listen to me, and everything will be okay." "What...?" "Stand up," Jake said, and Sophia struggled to obey, getting to her feet. "Great. Now follow me out of here." "What?" she asked, and her throat tightened up further. "Jake, I have friends--" "Just do as I say and you'll be fine," he said sharply, his tone surprising Sophia. "Now follow me and be quiet. You can't trust your 'friends.'" Amazingly, Sophia found that she could breathe better as she followed Jake away from the alley. She anxiously looked backwards, though, flinching when she saw that Harper and Amber were still fighting Mr. Daniels on the rooftop. She reached forward, tugging Jake's sleeve. "What?" he asked, glancing over at her. She stared back at him firmly. "I know that you may think those two girls up there aren't my friends, but that man up there isn't either. He tried to ---- me." Jake looked away. "All the more reason to get out of here." He started to walk away, but Sophia tugged him back again. "No, you don't get it. If he tried to ---- me, then he'll have no problem either with -------those two!" she insisted. "They're my /sisters/, Jake!" His eyebrows furrowed. "If that's true, they'll take care of themselves. Now come and don't talk anymore." Sophia stiffened. "What? You can't control me like this--" She broke off as her chest tightened. Her throat closed off, and she couldn't breathe anymore. She dropped to her knees, struggling to find air. Jake leaned over her, studying with an indifferent expression. He smiled mockingly. "I think you'll find that I can, Soph. So, if you don't want to end up gone, then you will follow me." Sophia glared up at him. But she knew that, ultimately, she didn't have a choice if she wanted to get out of this. Gritting her teeth, she stood up. "Good choice," Jake said. "Now follow me, and not another word." And so Sophia did. She forced herself not to look back anymore, promising herself that they would be safe, and that she would get out of this. Or so she hoped. ”*°•.˜”*°• End of Chapter •°*”˜.•°*”˜
