Vahalani’s grandmother is an absolute menace at the best of times. Summer is not the best of times. There’s the sound of a train whistle in the distance, and I brace myself, keeping my eyes glued firmly to the ground. Vahalani notices, as she always does, and squeezes my hand comfortingly.
