I was brainstorming a bit, and I came up with: Sages can be apprenticed at 3 moons. Sages usually have white fur, dazzled by the afterlife's luck, but that's only like 60% of the Sages. Sage apprentices only become full Sages (yes, full, because staying an apprentice and be way too long) when they know what EVERY herb does and why, which can take 5-20 moons! If a warrior kills a Sage, they are sentenced to burying that cat, and if they feel no guilt they are sentenced to death. Sages who retire are treated first with food, water, etc., unless they say otherwise.
