Hi! :D I finished this watercolor painting yesterday, but took several photos throughout the process over the last two months or so! I decided that I would finally post an art process! I've been planning on creating a project like this for a while, I just haven't had the time to put it together. I created a few instructions for anyone who wants to get into watercolor or give this piece a try! ɪɴsᴛʀᴜᴄᴛɪᴏɴs *finished product 1.) Sketching and inking: After choosing your reference photo, begin by lightly sketching out the basic shapes and silhouettes, then use a waterproof pen (the pen MUST be waterproof!!!! I used a Pigma Micron.) to trace over your sketch. Please do not ink in the shadows. Just lightly sketch where they should be, and fill them in with watercolor later. 2.) Continuation of step 1 3.) I began to place in a few shadows. A lot of artists prefer to use blue for shadows, but I mostly used purple as I wanted the painting to have warmer tones. 4.) Focusing on filling in specific sections. 5.) I started to add in a lot more shadows & darken more colors. 6.) Notice how I didn't ink in every brick on the arch? Instead, I used shadows in certain spots to where each individual brick should be. On the exterior, I focused a lot on each individual texture, rather than making it completely smooth. The exterior is aged, so I tried to convey it that way. 7.) I started outlining the stone path with watercolor. 8.) Same thing, except I also started working on the brick path. 9.) I did a light wash to darken the paths, although that did take away some definition. 10.) I decided to outline a few of the stones with a pen to give some of their definitions back. 11.) Worked a bit more on the exterior. 12.) Same thing! :P 13.) Same thing I think? 14.) I finally started to work on the scenery past the arch. 15.) Notice how I'm starting with using a very light blue for the water? If you cover all of the white, you'll end up covering spots that you could have used for highlights. Once you cover them up, you can't go back. Always start with lighter colors & washes. 16.) Adding in a darker blue. 17.) Same thing! 18.) Adding in more greenery & the reflections in the water! 19.) I darkened the walls, worked on the distant structures, and made the painting more coherent! Now you can relax, knowing that you finished.
