Notes: The Sculptor was very fun to work with! Her design was memorable, and things like the mismatched eyes and the sort of noodle arms made her very distinct from other ghost-like characters I’ve seen. I especially love the apron—its design incorporating all the other characters in the ARG really cements her status as a creator. The biggest problem she had was her READABILITY. I was unsure about her personality. Squid told me that she was bubbly and energetic, but also pretty responsible and leader-like. I wanted to be able to know these things just by looking at her. An example of good readability is the characters from the Pixar movie Up. Russel (the Boy Scout kid) is a very young character who is always smiling, has a Boy Scout uniform with lots of patches, and carries a backpack everywhere. This tells us three things about him (cheerful/excitable, loves nature, likes all his stuff) before he ever says a single word! I added things like the respirator mask and bigger gloves to show her responsible side (safety first!) but kept her round hair and cheerful expression to add that bubbly quality. In addition I made the shirt and apron different colors from the body so it was easier to tell the difference between each piece of her outfit, making the apron look more apron-like. Overall, I loved working on this and love her concept in general. But when you make your next character, ask yourself: Who are they? And how can I let the viewer know who they are without saying who they are? Or, if you want to be very blunt… Show, don’t tell.
