When Halor got his letter of acceptance from an academy in the north of Britain, he didn't hesitate to accept. His mum, however, was a bit more hesitant. She told him he couldn't go without more information about the mysterious school. The evening before term starts, a recruiter from the academy arrives at his doorstep and speaks with his parents while Halor plays chess with his older brother, who is preparing to head overseas to study architecture. After the recruiter leaves, Halor's mum takes him aside and tells him what the school is; an academy of magic. She then asks him if he'd still like to go, to which he grins and runs to his room to pack. As he barges into the room, Marcus is talking on the phone with someone. He quickly hangs up and blushes furiously as he asks what Halor is doing. Halor basically ignores him as he throws clothes from his wardrobe onto the floor and stuffs them in a suitcase. When he finally calms down, he tells his brother what happened and they stay up late wondering what guild Halor will be put in. The next morning, Halor is up at the crack of dawn and he inhales peanut butter toast. Promptly at 9 o'clock, he drags his mum out the door so she can drive him to the train station. Once he's on the train, he finds an empty car and reads a history textbook until a few other kids join him in the car. He becomes fast friends with Svyn and Lumen, they discuss their families and what they think school will be like. When they get there, school is nothing like Halor thought it would be and he gets very depressed when his old friend Lumen and students in the other guilds start to shun him because he is chosen to be a necromancer.
