The History of Space Exploration The First Artificial Satellite in Space... Sputnik 1! ... Sergei Korolev, from the Sovient Union, proposed the idea and development plan for a satelite by the name of Sputnik 1. Sputnik 1 would be the first of four satelites that were part of the Sputnik program by the Soviet Union. It was a huge deal as this was the first artificial satelite ever created. It would be launched on October 4th, 1957, at 10:29 PM, Moscow time. Later in January 4th, 1958, it would have to return to Earth due to it's batteries dying. Sadly, it burned up when reentering Earth's atmosphere. Now everyone knew that creating a successful artificial satellite, that was also able to be launched correctly and served it's purpose, was possible, and not a dream. However, the creation of Sputnik 1 came as a shock to the US, since they were hoping to accomplish this feat first. This was the start of the space race & US-USSR space race, as well as NASA. A US satellite, named Explorer, was launched 28 days after Sputnik 1's end. But by then, the Soviet Union launched a dog into orbit aboard Sputnik 2. By now, the Soviet Union was ahead of the US in their space race. ...
