Prologue, 5 years ago Everest dove into the cave, clutching an egg tightly in her talons. “ Apollo?” she asked into the darkness. No answer. He must not be here, she thought. She carefully placed the egg on the stone floor. Moonlight shimmered across the eggs' blue and green surface. As the hours passed Everest began to worry. Where is he? She thought. She waited another hour or two, but he still didn't come. She wrapped her Wing carefully around the egg. “You know,” she said. “I think Spring might be a good name.” she said to the unhatched Dragonet. “How sweet...” said a voice from the darkness. “Who's there?” Everest called out, Frostbreath building at her throat. “Oh me?” Said The Voice. “I'm the last thing your royal life will ever see icewing.” Chapter 1 Spring had always been the odd one out. Always completely in the wrong place, at the wrong time. This definitely felt like the wrong place. “Are you sure about this?” Spring asked Squid, the skinny seawing beside her. “Yes I am. you will learn and you will have fun at school.” “No I won't.” Spring muttered. “Okay enough. You're going.” Squid said. “Squid, they're gonna welcome me as much as they would a slug!” Spring protested. “Trust me.” he looked at her with a type of knowing. “Fine, but-” spring was interrupted by squid, “If everything goes terribly wrong, I’ll come get you.” Spring sighed and reluctantly glided down to the cave entrance where a nightwing greeted her. “I heard you were coming.” she said grinning. “One of our first hybrids, what an honor! Im fakespeaker. I'm not actually a teacher but I'll get you signed in!” Fakespeaker handed her a school Map and a rule book. Then she looked down and looked down at a long row of names. “That'll be… Gold winglet for you my friend!” She said, “Thanks..” Spring murmured. What an odd dragon. Wait.. I should ask… but Fakespeaker was already helping two young dragonets. Spring sighed. Walking through the school would have been more fun if she wasn't exploding with nerves. She started walking down a stone corridor, with fairy-like balls of light hanging over her head. Silver winglet, Jade winglet, Amber winglet, here.. Gold Winglet. Spring cautiously entered the room, and looked around. The room contained three beds that looked especially cozy with blankets of soft moss. Two of the beds were occupied, and one of the dragons looked up curiously at spring. She was a Mudwing, but her scales were oddly dark, and her horns pure black. “Hello.” said the Mudwing. Her voice was quite relaxed. “Um… hi.” Spring replied. Wonder who she is, none of the Mudwings I've ever met are that dark colored. Spring’s eyes strayed away from the mudwing to the other bed. Its inhabitants were sound asleep. “That's sphinx. She was asleep when I got here.” said the mudwing. “Oh.” Spring said duly. “Um.. What's your name exactly? I'm NightSedge by the way.” said NightSedge. “Spring.” Spring replied in a fast voice. NightSedge looked puzzled. “Are you sure? Last time I checked it was summer.” she said. “Oh!” Spring blushed. “I mean Spring’s my name.” “Of course! My mistake really.” NightSedge replied, causing a scroll to fall to the floor. Now it was NightSedge’s turn to blush, as she quickly picked it up. “So.. NightSedge.” Spring said. “Just call me sedge please.” Sedge replied, blushing again. “Um.. want to go to the library?” Spring asked, assuming that Sedge liked scrolls. “Ok sure. I do need to check out some new scrolls.” So they exited their sleeping cave and headed to the library.
