“Well, how do we try it?” Songcloud asked. “StormClan is descended from the only one of the original five clans that swam,” Irismoon said. “So if Echokit is really descended from Blackfang, she’d be able to swim really well.” “I’ll go talk to my kits,” Songcloud finished. A thought flashed through Icekit’s mind, and she yanked Echokit back by her scruff, knocking Windkit back. Icekit then flipped herself over onto Echokit, and saw that Echokit had caught on: if Songcloud saw them right outside the medicine den, they would get in trouble. Instead, Icekit had leapt back with both Windkit and Echokit, and now they were somewhere between the medicine den and the nursery. It would be assumed that the kits were playing outside the nursery and had moved around it. “Kits!” Songcloud called, stepping out of the medicine den. “Yes, Songcloud?” they chorused, pretending to stop their play. Icekit prayed to ShineClan that Songcloud wouldn’t think that they were a little too close to the medicine den. “Irismoon and I are going to the stream and we’d like you to come!” Icekit groaned inwardly. Songcloud was terrible at this kind of thing. Really terrible. “Okay,” Icekit told Songcloud. “But can we wait till tomorrow? I’m tired. Echokit’s tired too.” Icekit let out a yawn to prove her point. It was realistic, and Echokit yawned in response. Windkit followed up with a third yawn but it was clearly fake. Windkit was terrible at this. “Of course we can wait,” Songcloud said. “That’s fine. Now head in and take a nap.” “But we’re not sleepy!” Windkit complained. “But we are, Windkit,” Echokit meowed, glaring thorns at him. “Play by yourself if you want. I’m gonna sleep.” Icekit led Echokit into the nursery and they lay in Songcloud’s nest. Icekit felt sleep coming for her, and she fell asleep to the sound of Echokit’s light breathing. Icekit woke up in a bright forest. It felt warm and sunny, but when Icekit looked up, the moon was bright and full. A warm night? She’d never heard of it. As she was almost six moons old, she remembered her first leafbloom. The nights were somewhat warm, warmer than the other seasons anyway, but they weren’t this warm. “I thought I’d talked to you before,” said a small voice behind her. Icekit turned. A young kit, about a moon younger than Echokit. Her little brother- “Fangkit!” Fangkit smiled at her with love. “Hi.” “Why are you here?” Icekit asked. “Before I tell you, listen. I received the dream about the cat whose wings will shade the forest when I was alive. I was supposed to be the third cat, but since I died of kittencough, they sent Echokit instead.” The scene suddenly changed; they were by the lake, the water lapping at the shores like a kit licking up water from moss. The water sparkled like diamonds, and fish as blue as Songcloud’s eyes jumped. “Windkit will bring cats vital to taking the cat down, you will create plans to help us survive and fight, and Echokit will make it all happen,” Fangkit told her. “I understand,” Icekit meowed. So, Windkit will recruit some cats, I’ll be the planner, and Echokit will be the one to take action. A look slipped out from Fangkit’s calm mask, a look of despair and that what she thought now might not be correct, but it was gone in a moment and he looked like he’d figured it out. Icekit hoped she read him right, because reading cats wrong might lead you to doing the wrong things. “Do you know who the cat whose wings will shade the forest is?” she asked. “I do, but I am forbidden to tell, as it will alter what must happen.” he said, his voice full of wise words. “As for Echokit….” Fangkit looked uneasy. “I can’t say that her role will be a good one.” “She won't… join this evil cat, will she?” Icekit asked frantically. “No, of course not,” Fangkit assured her. “She will help you defeat this cat. But she must first undo what she will do.” “What-” Icekit started. But Fangkit was already fading. “Come back!” she yowled. But the forest turned sideways, and then went dark.
