word war 1: 244 words, 4 minutes “We can’t eat him, it’s Thursday.” The voice slices across my consciousness and I blink my eyes open, confused. Who are these people? But then I remember that I fell down the cliff and into the sea. These must be the mermaids. The treaty says they can't eat humans on Thursday or Tuesday but I'm not so sure, it seems very strange that they're here. “It’s nearly midnight,” the mermaid says, “then it’ll be Friday and we’re safe.” Oh dear. There must be a way out of this one, but I'm at the bottom of the sea. How can I get out of this? Racking my brain for a solution, I scramble away, but slimy hands drag me back. They’re not going to let me go without a fight, which could be an issue. I lie still and wonder how best to escape. Hissing laughter fills the air and I panic a little, my breathing harsh and ragged. It isn't fair; why did it have to be me stuck in this mess? I don’t want to be eaten by those foul creatures. I can almost hear a clock ticking in my head before I realize I really can. Time is actually ticking. The mermaid holds up a clock. Two minutes away from midnight. If I've ever been in a closer situation, I don't know what it was. This is a problem. A big one. I breathe in and out slowly, trying not to scream.
