Fiver has the vision of the burrow collapsing still, and the same rabbits join him and Hazel on the journey. Everything is normal until the rats. Buckthorn is bitten and his wound becomes infected. With nowhere else to go, Hazel and the Sandleford Hlessil stay with Cowslip’s Warren. Sadly, Buckthorn dies in the burrow, which causes Fiver’s paranoia (which was already bad) to make him go insane. When Bigwig is caught in the snare, Fiver doesn’t do anything because of his insanity. Bigwig dies, and Strawberry never joins the Sandleford Hlessil. Hazel begins to grow suspicious of his brother, who has suddenly become more optimistic. Hawkbit suggests they leave Fiver, but Hazel explains they need Fiver in order to find a new home. Once they find the down and meet Kehaar, Fiver lies about a vision that Kehaar would destroy them all. The rabbits drive Kehaar out, much to Hazel’s dismay. Hazel soon takes Hawkbit’s idea into consideration, but whatever he tries to do, nobody listens. They’ve accepted Fiver as their chief rabbit instead of Hazel. So, Hazel and Hawkbit create a rebellion, consisting of themselves, Dandelion, and Pipkin. They find Bluebell and Captain Holly, however Fiver refuses to help Holly, causing the old Owsla captain to die. Bluebell leaves the rabbits out of anger and grief. Speedwell tries to tell Fiver they need more does, but Fiver doesn’t allow anyone to go searching. When Hawkbit returns with does that escaped from Efrafa one day, Fiver reluctantly accepts the does but banishes Hawkbit. As it turns out, an Efrafan patrol had followed the does. Fiver convinced the Efrafan rabbits to make an alliance with his Warren, which convinces Hazel to take Dandelion and Pipkin, and leave to find Hawkbit and Bluebell. Meanwhile, Fiver has given away Speedwell to Efrafa in exchange for does. Captain Campion and Vervain decide that this isn’t a good idea, and they leave Efrafa. The two stumble upon Hazel’s rebellion, and decide to assist them. Hazel returns to Cowslip’s Warren in order to recruit Strawberry, only to find out that Strawberry had died in a snare. He reluctantly returned to his rebellion, and stated that they needed does, for he would make them a Warren. Hazel, Dandeliom, amd Vervain raid a human farm and take the domesticated rabbits for their Warren, Back in Fiver’s Warren, the whole place was a mess. Hyzenthlay escapes and is killed by a fox. Upon hearing this information, Thethuttinnang tries to fight Fiver, but Fiver injures her eye and banishes her. Right at this moment, Hazel and his rebellion attack Fiver’s broken and collapsed Warren. Fiver is driven out, and the alliance between them and Efrafa is broken. Hazel takes over, and chooses Hawkbit as his captain of Owsla. Vervain, Campion, and Dandelion become apart of the Owsla, and Hazel believes this to be a peaceful ending. But with General Woundwort still alive, and having the knowledge of Fiver’s defeat, Hazel’s new Warren is in danger. The fight goes as it usually did, just without Bigwig, Holly, Fiver, or Bluebell. Vervain dies while battling one of the Owslafa members, and Hazel defeats General Woundwort using tooth and claw. Whether Fiver is alive or not is unknown. But many rabbits believe he is, spreading his insanity across the land.
