Thursday, 9th of November, my cat, and best friend Keith was put down. I’m in complete and utter disbelief… it was so sudden, I wasn’t home for the weekend and when I came back, my cat was not well. He’s usually very social and happy, he’d come to you if you shouted on him from the other side of the house, but when I came back, he was hardly responsive, he wasn’t eating, he was drinking a lot of water but he’d just throw it back up, he’d occasionally make yowls or whimpers of pain, he was laying with his back legs splayed, he couldn’t even purr… we took him to the vet the next day. The vet said that he had a blockage in his bladder, which was building toxins in his body and damaging his kidneys, they did an operation that drained the urine, if we didn’t, his bladder would burst. We were told he had a 30% chance of survival. After surgery, the vet called and told us he had very high potassium levels, so high they couldn’t even get a read, severe kidney damage and dehydration, Keith was put on fluids and was under observation overnight. He survived, and over 3 or 4 days he stayed at the vet, recovering well. This morning, we got a call saying his kidneys were almost healed, his potassium level was normal again and he would probably be home after another 24 hours… but literally 2 or 3 hours later, we got some bad news, Keith was having a minor surgery, and his breathing was very irregular, they checked him and his heart beat was irregular and his lungs were filled with fluid, they said they could drain the fluid, but he’d still be sick and would only live for 3-7 days, so we made the hardest decision of my life, but the kindest one… we put him to sleep, goodnight Keith. He was so weak it was almost instant… it feels so unfair, he only turned 5 two weeks ago, he wasn’t old, he was perfectly healthy. Keith had more personality than some humans I know, he was my best friend. Robin and Keith were a duo, a package deal, and it’s hard to accept it’s just one now… rest forever in peace Keith, I always loved you and always will. Goodnight.
