"Person noted: Character twelve out of thirty. P-please open your eyes now." A distant voice met Malus's ears, its words ringing in her head. She opened her eyes, though it hardly made a difference against the dark gloom of... what was this place? The unfamiliarity only struck her now, and she realised she was not alone. Through the darkness, she could just about make out that this place was... a mansion of some sort? All she remembered was falling - falling from the world she knew. She remembered something, but it slipped her mind before she processed it correctly. She tried to reach out, to try and learn the truth. But something filled the empty void of emotions. Something else appeared. A desire. She felt in her bones, rushing through her blood, pumping in her heart. She searched the room for something of context, she tried to grasp any concept of the why and where she was. Footsteps echoed, breaking the delicate silence. Approaching. Fast. A shadowed figure loomed over her. Malus squinted her eyes just enough to make out the silhouette of a young girl - appearing about 9 or 10. She looked stunning, with hair as white as snow, and a face deathly pale. But her relief was short-lived, as upon closer inspection, to her horror, a face full of wires, and looking as though it were melting off. To her surprise, she was in shock, but the brief surface of panic did not arise. It was funny, really. After being thrown into various dangers, maybe after all this time she had finally gone numb to it all? The universe had a way of testing how far bad luck herself could go, how much it would take to break her. The questions multiplied, if she even had time to think, and she reached for a weapon that would never come. Her mouth opened to speak, but was interrupted by a second approaching figure. A humanoid figure - but it didn't quite look to be a person - approached Malus, the inaudible sound of footsteps never reaching her ears. She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out. She stared at it. She stared long. She stared hard. She stared into the empty void where eyes should have been, trying to look underneath the theatrical mask's surface. It looked as though the supposed face underneath twisted into a grin. The figure reached out its gloved hand. It was at that moment that she questioned everything, everyone she had ever known, and the people she would still come to know. She thought of her Felix, and her parents, her curse and her life as a whole, the one she would so often gamble on... Would she play it safe and take the lifeline? Or risk it all and win absolutely everything? She reached out just enough to take the outstretched hand.
