Chapter Twenty-Two Harmony looked into Fenn’s eyes and took a deep breath. “My real name isn’t Harmony,” she said softly, “It’s Delilah Narcissa Malfoy.” Fennec released her and stepped back. “Gosh.” He said, awkwardly. “I didn’t even think that that might be a possibility.” Harmony turned and pretended to be examining a book. “I don’t know what to do, Fenn.” she whispered. “They’re not the nicest family to live with, but they are MY family…” she trailed off. Fennec turned her around again to face him. “Are they hurting you?” “Not physically, but emotionally.” Harmony said. “Father treats me like a dirty rag, Draco refuses to talk to me, and Mother doesn’t really know what to do with me.” She sighed. “Being in the orphanage is almost better than this.” “Probably,” Fennec agreed. “Well, why can’t you stay here for a while? Hogwarts is only going to start in a few more weeks…” Harmony shook her head. “I’ll survive, Fenn. I think.” “Well, at least do something for your birthday.” said Fenn desperately. “You’re turning 12, remember?” “Oh yeah,” Harmony had almost forgotten her 12th birthday was only a week away. “I don’t know what the Malfoys will let me do. Perhaps you and Mel and I can meet up at Diagon Alley?” “Yeah!” Fenn looked excited. “We could invite a whole bunch of friends!” “I’ll do that then,” smiled Harmony. “Fenny! Time for dinner!” called Hannah from the next room. Harmony laughed as they walked out of the library, Fenn resembling a tomato with a clump of messy brown hair. The Smiths and Harmony sat down at the table to eat. Harmony found the meal delicious. Instead of the cold, pristine dinner sets at her family’s, the Smiths had chipped plates with faded patterns, and the meal was a huge mince pie baked by Fenn’s mum. Fenn’s father finally lowered the paper enough to actually look at Harmony. “So you’re from Fenn’s school are you?” he asked. Harmony smiled. “Yes, I also attend Hogwarts.” Jordan Smith frowned. “So you are a witch?” Harmony didn’t know what to say. Didn’t Jordan know about Hogwarts? Hannah slapped her husband on the arm. “Jordan! Harmony is our guest, not some criminal you have to be all “Mr. Police Officer” on her.” Eliza giggled, and she and Harmony shared a warm smile. Jordan shrugged and lifted the paper back up, hiding his face. After dinner, they all sat in the lounge room and listened to Fenn’s mother read items from Witch Weekly out loud. Jordan had disappeared, and so had Dylan. Presently, Dylan came back in with a huge bowl full of popcorn, which they passed around. Then Harmony learned to play Exploding Snap with the family, which she thought was really fun. When the clock neared nine, she had to go. “It was a pleasure having you here, Harmony,” said Hannah warmly. “I do hope you’ll come visit again sometime.” Harmony opened her mouth to answer when she was bombarded by Eliza, Dylan and Olivia. “Come back soon!” said Olivia, hugging her. “Bye!” Harmony smiled and stepped into the fireplace, the green flames swallowing her. Then she was back in Malfoy Manor, her clothes covered with soot. “Did you have a good time, my dear?” Narcissa asked from her place on the settee, her hands clasped in her lap. “Yes, thanks Mother!” the words came naturally to Harmony this time. “We had pie for dinner, and we had popcorn and read items from Witch Weekly, and…” she walked closer to her mother. “Mum, it’s my 12th birthday in a week. Can I go to Diagon Alley with my friends?” “Who specifically where you thinking of?” Narcissa asked, her eyes never leaving her daughter’s face. “Fenn, Melody, Noah, Kate and Bracken?” Harmony answered nervously. Narcissa smiled thinly. “Of course my darling, and we will have a little celebration here at home with our family. You can send out invitations tonight.” Harmony thanked her and bolted up to bed, where she found her owl, Demetrus, sitting on her wardrobe. She hurriedly found some white stationary with green leaves bordering it in her desk, and shot off letters to her friends. When she’d finished, she rushed downstairs and borrowed Serpent, the family owl, and sent both owls off to her friends. She lay back in bed, staring up at the chandelier on the ceiling. //I’m so excited for my birthday!// She thought.
