Hey! This book is not suitable for people under the age of 13, this is a sci-fi horror story! It has bl00d, death, and other unsettling themes. You have been warned.... - - - - - - - - - - The Beast could hear the prey’s breath. They could see the prey’s terrified expression and the way it looked this way and that for the Beast. If the Beast was capable of feeling emotions, they would feel pure, unbridled rage, because these tall, pale monsters were the reason that their master’s bones lay in the ground. The masters had offered peace and the prey had razed them to the ground with no a shred of remorse or hesitation. The Beast didn’t often contemplate their own existence, but now they wondered if the reason they and their Coterie existed was to hunt and kill the prey. Whatever the reason, this creature dared to step foot into their territory, and the Beast was going to do their job and do it well. Another one of the prey emerged from behind a tree and they spoke in their terrible, harsh language softly, looking at each other with an emotion the Beast couldn’t describe. Something unfurled deep in their mechanical chest, something they realized, with alarm, was pity, only for that emotion to be replaced with fury. They would not escape that easily. They unsheathed their claws and bared their fangs, preparing to lung. At the last second before the Beast pounced, the second prey saw them, its eyes widening. It screamed, and the Beast lunged for them. A flock of bians flew up, startled from where they had been perched, shrieking their alarm call, which mingled with the terrified screams of the prey creatures, which suddenly cut off, leaving only the shrieking bians to warn the other prey. The Beast sat next to the bodies, licking the blood from their claws. The prey creatures didn’t bleed the substance that the others of their species bled, but a strange, red liquid that tasted of iron. A bit of an acquired taste, but the Beast had grown used to it. The Beast stood and shook themselves off. They had done their job once more, and they did it efficiently and effortlessly. The eyes of the second prey creature flashed through their steel-cold mind and they paused curiously. They had deactivated these creatures many times, so why did this one stick with them? They banished the thought with a deadly snarl and bounded off through the jungle, metal hide flashing in the light of two moons. Their Coterie was planning an invasion, and knowing the prey, the Coterie would have new territory soon.
