Anna of Cleves: *starts playing Get Down* Here we go. Anne of Cleves (Anglicization of her name, she is Anna von Kleve in her native German. I will call her Anna) was painted by Hans Holbein. It was actually not exaggerated (check out the Rosenbach portrait, it's my favorite picture of her). It wasn’t a fake portrait, and people agreed it was a good likeness. Henry was the first person to actually insult her appearance. But Anna didn’t do herself any good the first time she met Henry. Here’s what happened: Anna thought she would have several days in England to prepare to meet the king, but Henry was impatient. So he approached her in disguise, having some strange idea she would recognize him and fall madly in love. Maybe his first two wives would know what to do (he did this regularly with Katharine of Aragon), but Anna didn’t know about this tradition. Now there are two accounts of this story: 1. Henry, a random stranger, was trying to kiss Anna, who was probably a bit scared of him (no surprise). 2. In the second version they leave out the kiss and just say she treated him like a servant. And it was in front of everybody. Henry came back dressed like a king and Anna realized what had happened. She was very meek about it all. But it was a blow to Henry’s pride and he started saying he hated her and insulting her in ways I could insult him. Also, a friend of Henry was imprisoned by him and in a last-ditch attempt to win back the king, said Anna was really unattractive, and those are the records that survive today. Yeah, I know I made the dresses all plain to make it easier to draw.
