Open roles: Hunters, Fighters and Healers ༻Roles and training༺ Cats are taught by their parents how to hunt and fight starting around their 5th moon. Once they master the basics, they often choose one of the following roles to learn, depending on their own interests and skills. If their parents do not have the ability, they are usually trained by a friend of their parents, or a traveling cat. Most of the time, cats have learned all they need to know by about 12 moons, though cats who are training to be healers may learn for a bit longer. While cats don’t have warrior and medicine cats, some cats prefer to focus on one skill over others. Most cats learn an equal amount of hunting and fighting, with some basic knowledge of healing. They learn essentially warrior skills, but some choose to focus completely on one thing. Hunters make up the majority of the cats who choose to specialize in skills. It's the easiest to learn and arguably the most useful day to day. Some hunters hunt only for themselves or their family, others hunt for fighters or healers in exchange for protection, medicine, or a better den. They often have a preferred place and prey to hunt, such as birds in the pine forests or rabbits in the meadows. Hunters are usually quick on their feet, thoughtful, and good planners. Fighters are the second most popular speciality, though not always useful among the usually peaceful valley cats. Some fighters are noble, protecting their family, hunters, or healers from predators and other threats, but others become bullies, overpowering cats and forcing them to give up food or dens. Fighters are often strong, quick to act, and analytical. Healers are the least common group, but a very important part of life. They learn about herbs and their uses, as well as how to find and/or grow them. Some healers travel around, healing anyone who needs it as long as they approach peacefully. Others have well established dens, often near useful herb patches where cats travel to if they or someone they know need help. Healers are often clever, peaceful cats who care about the world around them deeply. There are a handful of cats who chose to explore the world instead, sharing stories, so few it cannot really be called a speciality. They are storytellers, cats who collect and share tales from long ago. Of course, everyone knows about the five clans from before, but there are many more stories from before and after the clans broke apart. Storytellers are often curious cats who want to learn more about the past and present and love sharing their knowledge with others.
