- Information - The Carnotaurus was a fearsome abelisaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous (68-71 million years ago) in Argentina. At about 24 feet long, it was a dangerous predator that hunted the hadrosaurs and ankylosaurs that lived alongside it. Like the tyrannosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous, the Carnotaurus evolved to focus upon bite force and a powerful head, and as such had small arms which could be used for only a limited amount of uses (if any at all). It also had two horns on top of its head, unique for an abelisaur, whose purpose remains unknown. Some scientists speculate they were used to fight rivals, hunt prey, or attract a possible mate. These horns were also how it earned its name, which means flesh-eating bull. Paleontologists have even found skin impressions of this dinosaur, showing that the Carnotaurus had scaly reptilian skin and not feathers as many theropods of its time did. Despite all we know, there are currently no known fossils of the legs or tail of the Carnotaurus, leading us to speculate their appearance based on similar species and the rest of the skeleton. In any case, the Carnotaurus was an incredible creature and a fearsome predator. Here in this project I've created a simple reconstruction of this terrifying Mesozoic theropod. Enjoy!
