Some, called Darksides, are bonded to specific living persons (always cats except for one). They draw on each others' dark power and thus coexist, once the living learn of their existence, which comes as a surprise, usually. Cio is a Shadow bonded to Dark Matter, who is in love with Spirit (the red cat). This is when the Centigrasp takes control of the shadow world, and forces them to possess living cats, making them extremely hostile. The only ones who know are Cio, DM, and Spirit, after being attacked by his clan leader. They are confronted by the Centigrasp, who possesses Dark Matter, bursting from her back. Cio is unable to harm her, and Spirit, who has light powers, refuses.
