°•Chapter 2 - The Wand Chooses the Wizard•° Veronika hurried down the many flights of marble stairs in Malfoy Manor. Her pale golden hair was pulled black into a white bow, and she had on her favorite light gray turtle-neck sweater. She looked back and saw that Draco was only a landing behind her, so she picked up the pace. Veronika jumped down the last few steps and stopped to catch her breath. Draco finally reached the last step, huffing and puffing. They both dashed into the front hall, where Lucius, Narcissa, and Xavier were waiting for them. “Everyone ready?” Narcissa asked as she smoothed down Veronika’s slightly disheveled hair. “I think so!” She replied. She wanted to get to Hogwarts as soon as possible. Unfortunately, she would have to wait, after all, it was only August 10. Then, they all held hands and disapperated. Veronika uttered a gasp when they apperated in Diagon Alley. She definitely would prefer traveling the dirty way by floo-powder than the head-ache inducing way Lucius insisted on using to get places. Veronika smiled as she looked around. Witches and wizards and eager looking students went busily from one shop to the next. Rows and rows of magical looking store-fronts lined the narrow alleyway, and at the end, stood Gringotts Wizarding Bank. “I’ve got some business to attend to with Mr. Borgin. I’ll meet you all back in the Leaky Cauldron.” Lucius told his wife, and she nodded in agreement. As he walked away, Narcissa turned to her three children, “Why don’t we go to Flourish and Blotts first?” Xavier, Draco, Veronika followed Narcissa into the book store, but all the while, Veronika couldn’t help but wonder what Lucius was at Borgin & Burke’s for. Not long after they entered Flourish and Blotts, Veronika had all of her school books wrapped in brown paper and ready to be taken to Hogwarts. Xavier had gone to find his friends and Veronika wished she didn’t have to wait for Draco and her mother. “You run along to Ollivander’s, Veronika.” Narcissa instructed her as she stood next to Draco, trying to help him find the right kind of potion bottles, “We’ll catch up to you! As soon as we find his cauldron, and History of Magic text, and three sets of robes…” Veronika was already out the door and on her way down the alley to Ollivander’s. The wand shop enchanted her from the moment she stepped in. It was quite dim, but little flickering candles provided some light. There were rows and rows of long little boxes over every inch of the walls. Veronika was so intrigued, that when Mr. Ollivander set a few wand boxes on his desk, it made her nearly jump out of her skin. “Ah, Ms. Malfoy! I’ve been awaiting this day.” Mr. Ollivander’s smile was sincere. He had been awaiting this day? Why? “Let’s see, let’s see…” He shuffled through the boxes on his desk and pulled out and faded olive-green colored box. He took off the lid and carefully pulled back the layers of delicate tulle, motioning for Veronika to pick up the wand. She lifted out the beautiful dark colored wand and at Mr. Ollivander’s instruction, pointed it at the stack of books in the corner of the shop. Veronika’s eyes widened as the stack of books blew apart, scattering books all over the floor. She cringed and handed the wand back to Mr. Ollivander, “Let me grab another one for you to try.” Not long after he produced another box from the wall and handed the wand to Veronika. This time, she pointed it most cautiously at the vase on the window ledge, but it blew into pieces just the same as the books. Mr. Ollivander dug in his desk drawer for at least a minute, and finally produced a silvery black box. Looking at it very peculiarly, he opened it. Wrapped in night blue tulle, lay a dark-honey colored, ornate wand. Faint stars and constellations were etched into the hand-grip, and faint lines connected the stars into what was undeniably the likenesses of a raven and a snake. “Well,” Mr. Ollivander cleared his throat a little, “Go on and give it a try.” Veronika didn’t need to point the wand at anything. The tip started glowing intensely and a strange wind filled the room. Mr. Ollivander looked unbelievingly at her, “This, Ms. Malfoy, is a rare thing. You see, many years ago, I was told… well never mind.” All Veronika could do was stare. Mr. Ollivander was sure being very cryptic. “What’s the core?” She asked. “Star fragment.” Veronika became even more puzzled, she has never heard of any wands with star fragment cores before. Mr. Ollivander wrapped the box and gave it to Veronika and she thanked him. And just before she walked out the door he called, “Remember Ms. Malfoy, the wand chooses the wizard!”
