°•Chapter 5 - Wingardium Leviosa•° Sunlight streamed through the open window in one of the Ravenclaw girls’ dormitories. The songs of birds carried through the air and through the window. Veronika yawned awake, suddenly realizing that it was her first full day at Hogwarts. She jumped out of bed, careful not to wake Artemis, Andrea, Cleo, or Clara. Veronika put on her uniform sweater and dark gray skirt. She brushed her hair and pulled it back into a half-up style. By the time she was finished, her dorm mates were on their way out of bed. Once they were all ready, they made their way together down to the Great Hall for breakfast. “Isn’t Ravenclaw Tower amazing?” Cleo asked the other girls conversationally. “I’ll say!” Andrea agreed, “And how instead of a password, you have to answer a riddle. Brilliant!” “I can’t believe how fast you got it, Vera.” Art said, “It was a difficult one for everyone else.” Veronika just smiled uncomfortably, she definitely wasn’t used to being congratulated. Soon enough, when Veronika didn’t think she could possibly walk up any more stairs, they reached the Great Hall. Lot’s of students had already assembled in there for breakfast, but it seemed like the five girls were relatively early. Veronika sat down at the Ravenclaw table between Art and Tarian and filled her plate with an egg, two strips of bacon, a cinnamon muffin topped with sugar crystals, and a glass of pumpkin juice on the side. “Classes start this morning.” Tarian said, “I can’t wait!” “Me neither.” Veronika agreed. “Welcome students!” Professor Flitwick greeted as first-year students from Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff entered the Charms classroom. Veronika eagerly awaited the lesson, she was excited to learn spells besides offensive and defensive spells. The students were allowed to sit wherever they wished, in order to make new friends, Veronika guessed. She slid into a bench beside a sweet-looking Hufflepuff. “Hey, I’m Veronika, Veronika Malfoy.” She introduced herself. “I’m Freya Black, it’s nice to meet you!” They chatted while all the other students settled into their seats and became acquainted with their seat-mates. “Do you mind if I sit here?” A Gryffindor boy asked Veronika suddenly. “I don’t mind.” She said quickly, trying to act like he hadn’t startled her. “I’m Blake.” He smiled and held out his hand. Veronika shook it and told him her name. There wasn’t much time left to chat before Professor Flitwick called the class to attention and began the lesson. “Flip to the first lesson in your books and skim over it quickly while I go over our lesson plan for today.” Flitwick instructed. Veronika set her spell book on the desk and turned to the chapter titled ‘Wingardium Leviosa.’ “All right, first-years, repeat after me, Wingardium Leviosa.” “Wingardium Leviosa.” The students repeated. “Very good!” Flitwick congratulated them, “With your wands this time.” As each student pulled out their wands, Flitwick reminded them, “Don’t forget to swish and flick!” “Wingardium Leviosa!” Veronika’s feather in front of her floated into the air along with several others in the room, but none of them went as high as the Gryffindor across the room’s did. “Well done, Ms. Granger!” Flitwick praised the girl. She gave the boy next to her a slight self-satisfied look that almost made Veronika burst out laughing. After third period, Veronika, Hera, Freya, and Skye made their way through the numerous hallways to the green where Madam Hooch held flying class. Since they were early, the four friends helped Madam Hooch lay out the school’s training broomsticks. A few minutes later, Veronika spotted Draco, Harry Potter, Blake, Dawn Lupin, Annalise Diggory, Anna Walker, Clara, Tarian, and Neville Longbottom all walking out into the green. Then Madam Hooch began the flying lesson. “Good morning. Let’s start by practicing good broom care.” Madam Hooch set out several long tables and the students selected their spots. Veronika stood next to Skye at the fourth table down. “Hey Vera!” Skye looked happy to see her again, “It feels like today’s lasted forever, hasn’t it?” “Oh, yes.” Veronika agreed, she hadn’t felt this busy in a long time, “Sit together at lunch?” “You bet!” Skye smiled. Veronika was so glad that they could sit with people outside their house for breakfast and lunch. Madam Hooch passed out dishes of broom wax and cloths. Veronika dipped her cloth into the wax and rubbed it along the handle of her broom, and it was sparkling in no time. When all the students’ brooms were taken care of, they took them to the center of the green, lined up, and put their brooms down at their sides. “Now, everyone say ‘up’ and see if you can get your brooms off the ground.” Madam Hooch blew her whistle. Veronika, Harry, Dawn, and Annalise had their brooms in their hands after only saying ‘up’ once, while it took the other students at least two tries. “Well done, students.” Madam Hooch clapped.
