I'm thinking they're basically round little wooden peg dolls with pencil legs and ball joints. Everything else is just accessories. I feel like they should have an eraser somewhere, but I'm not sure where to put it? Anyway, here's one I drew to better figure out what they look like. Just a silly little guy. Cax creatures. Update: They live in colonies in paper nests and dance to communicate, like bees. Prefer dry enviornments. They come in a few varieties, as far as structural stuff goes. They can be single-jointed, double-jointed, or triple-jointed(like this one here), and the types of pencils they're made of vary too. But they prefer color. The whole Breaking and No Color thing has really thrown them off and upset them, because that used to be a big part of how they identified each other and communicated. Since then, they've had to adapt. They now wear more accessories and stuff unique to individuals to help tell each other apart. Also, they're not really supposed to have different colored legs, but sometimes mistakes(happy little accidents) happen because who can tell anymore? But they can still tell apart the different types of pencils, such as graphite, color, watercolor, etc. all the rest. And those are very important to not mix up because it is not good for them if one leg wears down faster than the other one does. They do indeed sharpen their pencil legs, but very carefully. They do a much better job than you or I would do. But they don't really like to sharpen them too often, because the length of their legs is also the length of their lifespan. So it's important not to shave too much of that off if you don't have to. They do indeed skate on paper. Update2: Their faces are drawn on, not sure with what yet. Might be Ink. Might be something else. Whatever it is, I'm pretty sure it's what gives them life. Also, their heads don't turn or move. Their faces can move around their heads somewhat, but the actual wood doesn't budge. Head accessories are also stationary. And apparently their erasers are on top of their heads. They are round and flat on top, and almost as wide as their heads are. They aren't very tall, and they don't really use their erasers much anyway. That's why a lot of them don't mind wearing hats and whatnot. Update3: oR mAyBe they have no erasers! Don’t need ‘em anyway, so why bother? Also, I think the Kards leave the Paper-Skater colonies alone because they're useful. Useful as in, they have somehow figured out how to cultivate Mourningberries, which is an important ingredient in Ink. Mourningberry juice may also be what they use to draw on their faces. So the Kards treat them sort of like bees. Update4: Do they have a queen figure? No idea. But maybe? Well actually probably they do- OHH the queen/mother is the one who has hands! :D They're probably the one who makes all the little accessories for all the paper-skaters- I like this idea and I'm gonna run with it :] Just gotta figure out the details- Update5: Okay, so I don't think most of the paper-skaters actually sharpen their legs to fine sharp points. Because a little roundness is better for skating. However, this also brought up the idea of warrior paper-skaters, who do sharpen their legs to pointy points and use them to defend their colony. They probably tend to have graphite or other harder kinds of pencil legs, while the regular worker paper-skaters tend to have colored ones. Unfortunately, the warrior paper-skaters don't usually live very long. As mentioned above, sharpening their legs cuts down on their lifespan, and it takes more sharpening to maintain pointy pencil legs. The warriors are well respected and cared for within their colonies throughout their relatively short lives though, so it isn't all bad. But it's still short. Regarding paper-skater Queens, I think each paper-skater colony probably has multiple Queens at any given time. They all collaborate in running their colony, and likely take turns doing all the different Queen things. The Queen things consist of building new paper-skaters, directing the workers, directing the warriors, general colony maintenance, and helping their paper-skaters with whatever they can't do on their own. Such as tying a knot or fixing their accessories from time to time. There's probably more that they do, but those are the basic essentials, I think. Still not clear on exactly what the Queens look like yet. Hm, maybe the Queens are also responsible for handling Kard relations. I think the paper-skaters are smart enough to realize that the Kards want their cultivated mourningberries, and also smart enough to negotiate terms and amounts for that. Not sure exactly how they would communicate though? They both have very different languages, and probably don't understand each other very well. Perhaps the Queens are the only paper-skaters who can speak? Sort of? If they can, they probably can't do it all too well.
CONT. Maybe they've just figured out how to imitate and understand Kard speech well enough to communicate what they need to, and not a lot more. They probably can't actually speak, and just make a close enough approximation by tapping and scratching. If all that about their different languages didn't make sense, here's some contextual info: Paper-Skaters communicate through drawing/dancing, so their language is almost purely visual. It is also very colorful and scribbly looking. Kards communicate through clicks, creaks, scrapes, etc. you get the idea. Their written language is a whole bunch of dots and various lines drawn on something like a music sheet. It can be read/written either left-right or right-left, and switches every line. It doesn't matter how it starts. So yeah, two very different languages. The Queens can imitate the sounds of Kard speech, but I'm not sure if paper-skaters can actually hear? I mean, I can't think of a reason why they would need to since sound isn't a part of their language. The Queens might have some special pieces that allow them to kind of hear so that they can more effectively communicate with Kards, but the other paper-skaters wouldn't have that. Alternatively, the Kards might just tap and scratch back at the Queens to make communication easier for the both of them. This tap-scratch language would be based on the Kard language, but adapted to be more visual for the paper-skaters. I suppose it's kinda like a Kard/Paper-Skater Morse Code :D Yeah, that's cool, we're keeping that. Most likely, I think only the Queens and some Kards(the ones who interact and negotiate with the Queens most often, and maybe a few who just think it's cool) know the language. And because of its limited application, the language itself is likely also fairly limited.
