I text Sky as soon as I get on the bus. ‘New kid is coming today! You excited?’ Sky texts back quickly, she’s probably on the way to school too. ‘Yep! I wonder what they’re like!’ ‘Who knows? Maybe they’ll become the coolest kid in the grade.’ I replied. ‘With the way most of the kids at this school are, I doubt that.’ She had a point. “Fair. I gotta go, my bus just got to school! Cya!” I walk into class, today it’s math. I look around for any unfamiliar faces, and I see the new kid. I set my stuff down at my seat, and walk over to them. “Hi! My name’s Quinn, and I use they/them pronouns. What about you?” I said. “Uh, hi! My name is…” They paused. “Sam. My name is Sam and I use they/them pronouns too!” They started whispering. “The teachers don’t know though, so just keep it quiet.” “Same as me! Just letting you know, you can tell Mx. Jaxon about your name and pronouns. They’re non-binary!” I smiled. “Good luck on your first day!” I said, sitting down in my seat. Sky soon walked into class and sat down next to me. “Did you talk to the new kid yet?” She asked as soon as she sat down. “Well good morning to you too.” I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes. “Sorry, I’m just super excited.” She replied, her face reddening just a little bit. “But yes, I did talk to them. They seem super nice!” I told her. Just as Sky was about to say something, Mx. Jaxson walked into class. “Good morning everyo- Oh! It seems we have a new student today. Would you like to introduce yourself?” They said, looking at Sam. “Uh.. sure!” Sam replied. They walked up in front of the class. They looked around, everyone’s eyes on them. I gave them a thumbs up and smiled. “ᴴᶦ ᵐʸ ⁿᵃᵐᵉ ᶦˢ ˢᵃᵐ ᵃⁿᵈ ᴵ ᵘˢᵉ ᵗʰᵉʸ/ᵗʰᵉᵐ ᵖʳᵒⁿᵒᵘⁿˢ.” They said quickly and quietly. “Welcome to the class, Sam! You can sit down now.” Nothing else exciting happened, just calculus. Later, at the end of the day, I was at my locker, when Sky walked up behind me. “Hey!” I jumped, turning around. “Jeez, you scared me. What’s up?” I said. “Do you wanna come over to my house after school?” she asked. “I mean.. maybe? I’d have to ask my parents, hold on.” I replied. I texted my parents, asking if I could go over to her house. ‘Are you going to stay for dinner?’ Mom asked. “Can I stay for dinner?” I asked. “Of course! I could probably convince my parents to let you sleep over if you wanted.” She replied. “Listen, I gotta get on the bus but I’ll text you with updates. Bye!” I said. “Bye!” I kept texting her and mom, and I can sleep over at Sky’s house tonight!!
