Restaurants were plenty, from small, cheap hole-in the wall places to fancy 3-star restaurants. Fishing boats were in the distance, bringing back large amounts of crabs and lobsters. Tourists flocked to Marlin to try its local cuisine. The economy was thriving. Just at its peak, a plague struck the village. The restaurants all closed their doors. Tourists quickly left Marlin. The local hospital was overcrowded. Its residents died. Beatrice, only 12 years old at the time, lost her mother to the plague. She had 2 older sisters, Anastasia and Julia, 14 and 17 respectively, and a father. She and her mother were very close. They used to bake pastries, play games, and sew together. She was shaken. She hardly ever left her room, only to get some food. afraid she would catch the plague. She cried at night, grieving. For months, life was like this for her, becoming numb with grief. Even after the plague ended and Marlin was recovering, she was still paranoid. Her father tried to talk to her often, but she would not talk about her grief. He was a painter, and he got her a set of quality oil paints, canvases and paintbrushes, to take her mind off of it. She made her first painting. It was of some violet flowers, her mother's favorite. "Ugh, this is terrible!" She sighed. "Continue practicing, and you' ll get the hang of it! Besides, I like it." Her father said, encouragingly. She would paint non-stop, getting her dress messy. She had some joy, for once. She was more willing to talk to her family. "Dad, dad, look!" She would enthusiastically show her paintings to everyone, and as time passed, her paintings improved and she moved on from her grief. She was 19, and she put her first piece up for auction. "Going once, going twice... SOLD! For 700,000 dollars, it's yours!" The auctioneer's voice boomed. The winning bidder walked up to get the painting. Beatrice had tears of joy in her eyes. Her sisters hugged her. She spent the money on opening a store, in which she sold her paintings. She moved on from her grief, but she never forgot her mother, wearing a violet flower to remind her of their time together. Her sisters also work at the store, selling hand-sewn, historical-style dresses. Marlin went back to the bright, joyous coastal town it was, with its many restaurants flourishing. She, Mycelium and Wander (other characters) exist in the same universe. Mycelium visits her store sometimes, but mostly stays in the woods.
