the guys: i got sapo like. 2 years ago? maybe 3? so he’s something like 2 or 3. his wife died about a year ago and he was lonely and so i got him a friend. he immediately tried to eat sam but now theyre buddies (sam always puts his foot on sapo’s face and they scuffle but dont hurt one another). theyre african dwarf frogs, they live to about 5 or 6 years old, so sapo is in his mid 40s and sam is about 18 in human years. details on their living situation: theyre in an 11 gallon tank with two sponge filters and a heater. i change their water about once every week or two, and i do a deep cleaning twice a year. in their tank they have devil’s ivy (thats the stuff on the top) a fake plant in the back that sapo likes to climb into and hide in the two or three times we’ve had to transport him, marimo moss balls, some little foreground plants that look like underwater parsley and java ferns. for their size, theyre basically living in a castle. at some point, when time allows, i’m going to get a couple snails so i dont have to clean as often so they can have some more friends. their names: so officially, sapo’s full name is monsieur/madame sapo (mr frog in french and portuguese), and sam’s full name is samanuel samantha. african dwarf frogs can change sex if they want to. hence the gender encompassing names.
thank you sapo and sam for being such beautiful models also the reason sapo’s eyes are glazed over is because as they grow up their eyesight turns more and more short range. when theyre kids they need to eat all the food they can see and when they grow up theyre mostly ground feeders.
