Floyd was the most famous boy in the eighth grade. At least, he thought he was. Ever since he discovered his magic when he was nine and turned himself into a cat, he had always thought himself higher than everyone else. He was the only three-foot-tall talking cat in the village, wasn’t he? It seemed right to have a little pride. This all changed when he turned fourteen. The day after his birthday Floyd’s parents had pulled him aside and told him he was being sent away to a boarding school for “extra training”. This might seem reasonable, as Floyd was unmistakably destined for the extraordinary. What was not reasonable was the fact that said boarding school was located in a different realm. (For those who don’t know, a realm is a universe. So, quite a big deal) To add some context, Floyd really needed to be sent away. Besides his grades (and ego) being more than enough to warrant a special education, Floyd had powerful magic, which he could not control. Although fairly common knowledge, it should be said that humans do not know much about magic, so it was not like Floyd could get a decent magical education where he was. To add more context, Floyd regularly did things such as, but not limited to: turning farm animals into cougars, teleporting random objects and occasionally making them vanish all together, and changing the properties of any magical object he touched. (If you want to know the specifics, Floyd had powerful Refocusing and Portal magic, although no-one in his village knew that). So, to summarize the situation, Floyd was a nuisance. (An intelligent and extraordinary nuisance, but still a nuisance all the same.) And now, Floyd’s parents were sending him far away in the hopes some more experienced adults would be able to make him a bit more manageable. And it wasn’t like Floyd had any way to avoid it; he didn’t know how to use his powers.
